I assume SPN fandom is on its way in that direction too. Used to be on the kink memes but the A/B/O, please abuse out fave character and bugger the plot seems to be everywhere now. And then it's offset by chronically sickly sweet romance stuff which is almost as bad. I actually enjoy some kink (in fiction) but I don't want it to be the only offerings I can find so I empathise.
But you write for you, first and foremost - at least while you're writing you know your fics will tell a good story. I'm sure there are fans out there who appreciate it.
There's A LOT of weird shit in SPN. I mean, they started a damned subgenre after all... That's why I'm really just on the outskirts of it. I do art but I generally don't write for it. I'm sorta scared of any fan-love/backlash.
I do write for me - I do - but it's nice to have readers now and then ;) Just a tough Sunday, I guess.
The Web brings people together because no matter what kind of a twisted sexual mutant you happen to be, you've got millions of pals out there. Type in, "Find people who have sex with goats that are on fire" and the computer will say, "Specify type of goat." (RICH JENI)
I like fandom in part because it provides a place for the outliers, a "safe" harbour to explore sexuality in general.
But the thing to remember is why you see so many requests for those kind of stories is that they're not actually a significant proportion of the fan fiction that gets written. If your kinks are basically vanilla with perhaps just a swirl of chocolate, you like handcuffs as well as pining, you're going to find lots of stuff to read and probably aren't going to need to seek help locating it... unless the fandom is tiny.
If you're in a fandom based on a canon with "freakier" content -- Criminal Minds, SPN, CSI, Preacher -- you're probably going to see more of it OR at least more requests for it.
Basically, I just want ALL THE PINING. And some occasional, blistering sex. Pretty vanilla.
Are you saying my fandoms are weird? ARE YOU SAYING THEY'RE WEIRD??? Yeah, I know... freaky content for sure. I just get tired of seeing people ask for rape as entertainment *sigh*
I'm saying a lot of the stuff we both love to watch is weird. :D
I get tired of it as well. While incest is my only concrete squick -- NEVER READING DON'T CARE WHO WROTE IT (I may have opinions) -- there's a lot of things I'll only read in a given context which is mainly if it's a hinge point in a much larger plot rather than the feature in a piece of PWP. Bad things happen to people and have a much higher percentage chance of happening to characters in the sort of canons I favour. Even then, I need it to be written as a terrible thing and not as a none-too-secretly sexy thing. I prefer it not be dwelled on beyond perhaps a few establishing details.
This is also something that's been going on in fandom for years. Your Reid list pales in comparison to the things that have been done to Illya Kuryakin in old Man From UNCLE fic including castration.
We write to offer something besides the kinds of things on that list, to tell the kind of stories we're interested in. So don't get disheartened!
There's a lot I still won't read. Things that make me twitchy and squicky and full of "WTF?" But that's okay, because there's even more of the stuff I'm into. And I try to put as much of that out of there as I can.
There are hard squicks I can't get past: rape and mpreg are two of them. And I'm moderately irritated by pointless whumping. If you intend to hurt a character, at least have it COUNT for something.
I haven't written rape into a story as more than a passing referencing and I've never written mpreg... although I'm considering writing mpreg as one of the last tropes I haven't knocked over. It's just not a subject that interests me.
We can be grumpy old women together. I'll bring the sherry... and the cabana boys.
Thirdly, *sigh*. Yes, I thought I was becoming a cranky old broad about this too. But at some point you have to say "nope, it's not me - this is just crazypants nonsense". You can be a cranky old broad AND legitimately call shit out at the same time.
