"...I always worry about, not worry, but my nightmare is making someone see something in the flesh, and then making them [...] feel some responsibility to pretend to like it. I’d be like, ‘Oh, here!’ and you’d go like, ‘Oh, that’s great.’ On the internet, it’s this safe space where I can put it up and people can click on it or not. I don’t have to ( Read more... )

Oh man, I totally get what you mean. I used to not show my art to ANYONE, and was even leery of posting stuff online for a good while when I started doing fanart. As much as I like to bitch about my PBL class (problem based learning: we have to do presentations, and every class we have to give concrit on every group member) and communications, it's really done wonders for my ability to receive concrit.

And although I appreciate honesty in people and think it is sorely lacking in many, I have to LOL a bit at your examples XD

There is an art to giving concrit as well as receiving it, and this is something that the internet generation doesn't understand. Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean that you should share it without consideration.

The one really valuable lesson that I took away from art school was to look hard to find the elements that work and those that don't in any given piece. For example, I hate Cubism - but if someone showed up in class with a Cubist piece, I couldn't allow myself to indulge in my kneejerk "I hate Cubism" reaction. I tried to find out WHY I hated the piece, and see if there were any elements that I admired. It's not an easy thing to do and I often failed ;)

Anyway, I think that as I get older, I get a little less worried about what others think (just a little), so that's why I've begun to do more online fan art. Why not, ya know?
