I like this meme and find it really interesting to see what writers think about their own stories, particularly as the things we love often aren't the same thing as what readers love due to the difference in perspective.

I'm also really happy to see Proposal Conundrum and So You Know Where I'll be on this list. :D

I love the ending of PC, but it's a perfect example of that gap between the writer and the reader. So often with fan fiction the reader will push for that extra story for the emotional pay off even when it's already there, just not overtly so.

As to SYKWIB, I didn't realize you felt that way. Reese?

Yeah, I'm not wild about Reese, but I adore Finch (nerd love strikes again). I like Reese and Finch together, but I find Reese's solo motivations to be a bit... I dunno... expected? To me he's just the less interesting of the two. And I wasn't lying when I said that I really don't have a solid feel for either of them, writing-wise. I can't wait for season 2 to come out on DVD so I can catch up *iz bouncy*.

As for PC, I'll stick to my guns and insist that it had to end that way. I don't usually have such strong impulses about such things, but the properness of that ending has always stuck with me.

I lean heavily towards Finch myself but then I've always been more interested in big brains. *g*

What I do find interesting about Reese is that I think he's led his life as a cypher, a reflection of the expectation of others and that's what was at the heart of his distrust of Finch to begin with, what did Finch want him to be? It's been interesting watching Reese begin to work Reese out for himself.

My season 2 Blu-rays were delivered yesterday \o/

As said, I really like the ending of PC too. :D

I think my problem with Reese is that the whole cypher-deadly spy thing is something I've seen before a lot, so it's not that interesting to me. I do enjoy him both with and in contrast to Finch, so - for me - the pairing simply wouldn't work without Finch. He's doing the heavy lifting for me ;)

The fandoms in your top 10 are not among my fandoms, but all the same I hugely enjoyed reading about the creative process behind these fics.

P.S. I took a quick peek at your non-smutty improbable tentacles fic and even though I don't know the series or the characters, wow, that was strangely charming and sweet!

Maybe I should change the title to "Non-Smutty Improbable Tentacles"... blythechild September 6 2013, 13:54:29 UTC
I'm impressed that you read something that is outside of your fandom interests and that you found it charming. I'm honoured ;)

The thing is that when I'm writing something, I have all of these THOUGHTS and IDEAS and MOTIVATIONS that readers never really see, so doing memes like this can be more therapeutic than responding to fan comments with "No, that's not what I meant AT ALL."

...You'd probably get a drop in readers due to the 'non-smutty' but a spike due to the 'tentacles'. (Plus people like me who are attracted by the word 'improbable' ;-)

I love it when writers pull back the thick velvet curtain (ooh) and show what motivated them to create a fic, or to write it a particular way. It's hugely interesting. Hmm, maybe I should give this a whirl after all. (My problem is that I can only do 10 fics if I include a couple of drabbles! Eep! *is an underachiever*)
