New LJ Release WILL Burn Out Your Retinas

Oct 30, 2012 13:09

LJ Release #98 went live yesterday and some of you may have noticed the little bar at the top of your friends page asking if you want to switch over to the 'new look' that they are beta testing. Basically, this option makes ALL friends pages take the standard lj white and blue colour scheme, they have laid out the entries similar to a Tumblr feed, ( Read more... )

I commented. I doubt it'll do any good, but I commented.

I also decided to take a friend up on a DW invite, so I'll be over there shortly as well.

I have a DW account as well but its mostly a placeholder. I have invested a TON of time and effort over here and I'm very unfuckinghappy about starting fresh somewhere else (plus, it's PINK. fucking PINK.)

The largest gripe that I have with lj is that I'm here BECAUSE of the level of customization. I don't want everyone all up in my bizness like FB or Twitter, I WANT to post text-heavy entries unlike Tumblr, and I LIKE having control over my security levels. LJ is busy trying to be like everyone else even though everyone else is catering to a younger, less focused, transient fan base. Teens don't buy paid accounts or option add-ons or promote off-site advertising. I'm not sure what the financial bottom line for LJ is these days 'cause from where I'm sitting, it looks like they just set it on fire.

Basically? As I understand it, LJ's main user base is not in the US. It's in Russia, where Livejournal has become a political platform. So that's where the company's focus is... the company also being Russian. I can only assume that this is where the largest portion of their revenue stream comes from, so that's the user base they're catering to.

Although why Russian LJ users would be anymore pleased with a scorching white Tumblr-style Friends page is anyone's guess.

Even with the heavy Russian presence, their user needs are still mostly text-based, not images like Tumblr or Instagram. I doubt that this change will please Russian bloggers either...

huh, now it seems like time to move fics to AO3 or DW or someplace that might not just vanish or otherwise become unusable? I'm on Tumblr and like it for what it is, but for reading, it's usually here. How disappointing....

I host all but comment fic stuff over on AO3. My real issue is that this blog has been here for 7 years and even if I found an easy way to archive it and upload it to DW, I'd still lose a lot (like comment threads and old photo links etc.) It'd be a real upheaval.

Oh LJ... what have you become?

I logged my complaint yet have the feeling that it will be discarded.

At least I have DW and AO3, but its not the same.
