the being a man thing is not new, but I DO think it's a really good sign that in these dreams a) you felt empowered b) you fought back(or intended to)

maybe you project some major aspect of your own strength onto the very idea of maleness. I think most everyone underestimates the effect of patriarchal culture on the subconscious...

or, again, you could look into the idea of your animus...

I think that it appears more culturally acceptable for men to fight back, to be physically violent, and to be seen this way no matter what period in history or what situation arises. Its deeply ingrained no matter how liberated we feel as modern women... Also, men are physically stronger than women. The Bad Guys in my dreams are almost always men, so I guess I have to be a man to fight them. *shrugs*

The anima and animus in Carl Jung's school of analytical psychology, are the two primary anthropomorphic archetypes of the unconscious mind, as opposed to both the theriomorphic and 'inferior'-function of the shadow archetypes, as well as the abstract symbol sets that formulate the archetype of the Self. The anima and animus are described by Jung as elements of his theory of the collective unconscious, a domain of the unconscious that transcends the personal psyche. In the unconscious of the male, it finds expression as a feminine inner personality: anima; equivalently, in the unconscious of the female, it is expressed as a masculine inner personality: animus.

It can be identified as the totality of the unconscious feminine psychological qualities that a male possesses; or the masculine ones possessed by the female.

Jung viewed the anima/animus process as being one of the sources of creative ability.
