Livejournal's in trouble. Again.

I snagged this from redbarnus this a.m.

Livejournal lays off 20 of 28 employeesWTF?!? This blog is a very important part of my daily routine. It also helps me keep in touch with friends, meet new people, and explore alternate creative outlets. I use it as a personal diary of sorts and I am now concerned, that if the site collapses, nearly 4 years worth of ( Read more... )

There's an archiving program you can use to back everything up except the visuals on your LJ. I used it for mine and for the SG as well. I think it's LJArchive, but let me double-check. BRB...

EDIT: Yes, that's the one. Link is here:

Thank you. I'll have to back up my galleries as well but maybe I'll just start a Flickr account for that...

Okay - HOLY FUCK! - this is totally beyond me...
Can you tell me the steps that you went thru to use this archive?

**EDIT: Nevermind. I downloaded the wrong file type. I just used the link that you posted in the Gallery and it worked fine.

Glad you spotted that. I realized the download path was a bit odd.

In other news, I'm having a problem backing up the SG because for whatever reason it doesn't want to download the comments to the entries (which are kind of important, argh...) I've located a couple of DOS-interface programs that will allegedly do what's needed, but I'll need to have time to mess with them. Which I don't have at the moment. I'm gonna post the sites to the SG and see if there are any tech-heads out there who can help.

I've been hearing that this may just be a malicious rumor, but I have my doubts about that. For now, I'm just praying nothing implodes before backups can be made.

malicious rumor or not, I'm not taking chances with 4 years worth of entries...lj has been in trouble for a while - it's been evident thru their news releases lately.

Sheesh....I live under a rock. I'm completely oblivious to life outside my own little burrow....What's going on with Lj now???

It only happened yesterday (I think). LJ fired 60% of the staff at the San Fran offices and the Russian parent company is moving most of the day-to-day operations to the Motherland. It probably WON'T implode but service won't get any better and there may be a lack of care/concern for issues that have plagued lj in the past ie: spam bots, increased ads on blogs, more cash grabs for paid accounts etc.

My entries only go back to mid-October, and I've only a few comments, so I'm slowly mirroring my l'il slice of LJ over at WordPress.

I do like the community-ness-ification around here though....

yeah, me too. I've looked at other sites (mostly because non-lj-ers can't read anything but public posts WITHOUT signing up for an account - I have plenty of folks who'd like to keep in touch with me but don't wanna get an lj page) but haven't come across anything that I like BETTER than lj. I even have a Vox account that I never use..

I managed to archive my 4+ years worth of entries today, but I'm hoping that I'm just being paranoid. And after I just paid for a permanent account too....
