I have never experience a problem of this nature so feel ill qualified to comment *whistles*
I'm very cautious with sarcasm when dealing with strangers and innocent by-standers -- it does not play well in the States -- but old friends? If they don't know I love them and mean everything in the best possible way then I'm stumped.
As most of my friends already know, I'm a pretty sensitive person, so I rarely get sarcastic with anyone. I tend to be a little thick headed sometimes so I'm probably the type to get offended easily (depending on the nature). I do, however, know when my friends are being humourous and when they aren't. Maybe your friend was in a bad mood when he got your email and just took it personally? If he knows you by now, he should know that you didn't intend for your remark to be malicious. I hope he responds to your last email and finds it funny. ;)

it's amazing that the sarcasm thing doesn't go over with total strangers considering how liberally it's used in tv dialogue these days.....
