The Many Adventures of Fay Fairburn - A Home’s Love

Feb 06, 2012 14:08

[This is a stand alone story, written in response to the San Francisco Chronicle article, "Condo left to aid S.F. homeless," 2/2/2012.]The slim blue house stood in the middle of a long row of houses, each hugging the next with no space between. The blue house saw the girl walking down the street, scuffing her unlaced shoes against the sidewalk, and ( Read more... )

What an interesting side-trip! I love the house; it's such an interesting character. :)

Nice story, great interpretation of the article. Only in San Fran can a tiny, 525 sq foot apartment be worth $400,000 - that's so insane! Our place is four times larger, and in the market here probably only half that amount, LOL.

I also love the idea of the blackout poems. When I was in college I "created" (as far as I know) something I called Fingerprint Poetry. One hand represented the vowels, and the other any five consonants of your choice. The ten letters were the only ones you could use for your words. I called it "fingerprint" poetry because I used markers to color in the fingertip pads different colors, whatever I wanted to use, so the poems were colorful too.

Yeah, I'm funny like that, LOL.

I know, San Fran is crazy pricey. The only equivalent city is New York, I think, which is also insane.

Fingerprint poetry sounds cool! Do you have any posted anywhere? I would like to see one.

No, I don't have any posted anywhere - that was 20+ years ago. I suppose I *might* have one sitting around the house in a folder somewhere, but the odds aren't in my favor!

Totally understandable and no pressure. I was just curious. :)

I love that blackout poem - I actually feel that you could have submitted just that this week and done really well with it. You've given me inspiration for something to do with the children!

I would be a great project to do with kids. You might want to also look at pages from A Humument, by Tom Philips, which incorporates color and art into the form of erasure poetry. Here's a tumblr for that: http://tomphillipshumument.tumblr.com/

I almost did just that, as I could have created several other blackout poems.

The only reason I posted a Fay story again is that I promised at the beginning of the competition that each post would include a Fay story. So there it is.
