Poetry and a Bike

So, I've been reminded that poetry is an excellent way to pick up new words. Yesterday I read two poems that I liked so much I'm considering photocopying them to hang on my wall. Besides both being lovely (one simply evocative, the other providing an internal narrative), they both turned up words I either didn't know or had forgotten ( Read more... )

Metatarsal!!! anonymous February 16 2007, 04:55:40 UTC
I like the word metatarsal! I like it even better when my metatarsals work. That's where I got my stress fracture when I was in Spain-- the middle metatarsal on my left foot (middle toe). Lucent is a cool world too... makes me think of light and stuff :P. Spanish word for light = luz. Well, I hope you don't get too sick.. a lot of people have been sick around me too. Knock on wood I get to stay clear of feeling the yuckiness.

Cheers! ~Purple Monkey

Ooo. Spanish word. I like that: luz. I will add it to my miniscule collection.

I don't think I'm going to get too sick (knock on wood). I slept nice 'n late today and am downing vitamin C. My immune system has been nicely effective lately, so we'll see.

Lucent is a pretty word! Seems very nice to use in poetry. As for metatarsal... are you sure you weren't reading some sort of medical journal? :D

My bike had some problems with jiggly pedals (and attached gears). As it turned out, the bearings where the pedals attach were going out. Luckily replacing them was fairly simple, as they usually just come in a cartridge which fits right in there. The nice folks at the Outdoor Center at Western helped me with that. Perhaps your problem is something similar!

I will send you a nice long email one of these days, so's we can catch up a bit. I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to chat too much while you were back in WA!

"As for metatarsal... are you sure you weren't reading some sort of medical journal?"

:P I'm sure. Here's the context: "Tumbling from some far-flung cloud/ into your bathroom alone, to sleeve/ a toe, five toes, a metatarsal arch,/ it does its best to feign indifference/ to the body . . ."

There's more, but I don't want to write the whole poem out. It's from "Love, Like Water" by Julia Copus.

Thanks for the suggestion about the bearings. I think I'm going to see what I can figure out tomorrow.

Please do send me a nice long e-mail. I want to know what you're up to. ( :

Hehe, okay okay, it sounds pretty nice used there. :) Maybe that's a sign of a good poet, when they can make metatarsal sound good!

I'm pretty terrible at getting around to writing nice long emails, but I will do my darnedest. I always WANT to, it's just getting up the motivation, and all that. I have plenty of time next week, so hopefully I'll do it! :)
