Sad Sundays, Happy Mondays

Oct 07, 2008 13:28

Sunday evening, after the happiness of the day, was the saddest part of my whole stay in Saint Petersburg. Julia, who had been my guide, mentor and rock since I arrived on the Thursday afternoon was going away on a University Field Trip first thing on Monday and wouldn't be back until after I had left on the Tuesday. In short, after Sunday I wouldn ( Read more... )

I think one thing I really like about St Petersburg from your pictures is that while it's a big city, there's lots of forest-y areas!
And WOW. Those are some of the most gorgeous looking churches I've ever seen!
Sorry to hear you didn't have Julia there on your last couple days, but sounds like you were well taken care of by Katie! :)

Thanks. Yes, I was delighted by the parks and gardens in the city and the forested areas I visited on the edge of the city.

It's strange, I don't have a religious bone in my body, but I love churches. I feel very uncomfortable inside them, but outside I can admire and appreciate the architecture.

It was a shame that Julia had to go away, but it was the right thing and she left me in very good hands, Between them, Kate and Nik helped me out so much and it's great to think that I have made new friends. I really missed Julia in those last couple of days, though I did get to talk to her on the phone a couple of times. :))

That's definitely understandable - churches are some of the most gorgeous places, especially old ones!

New friends are always good! And you'll definitely see Julia again :D

You're right, it's great to make new friends. I know that I will see Julia again, and I can't let it be as long as it took us to meet for the first time. It's just that at the moment I can't see when or where it will be. But I know it will happen and that's the important thing! :))

Hey... sorry you had to say goodbye to Julia. But happy to know you had a good time otherwise. I have a senseless obsession with the idea of going far north too, inside the arctic circle. And to experience the "really" long days and nights, and the northern lights. But to tell the truth I've never been outside northern India lol. Ah, someday I will travel :-/

Thanks. I would love to go back there at the end of June when Saint petersburg experiences 'white nights' when it never quite gets dark. It must be really eerie. Yes, I would love to go further north too, perhaps one day I will get into the Arctic Circle.

I'm sure your travelling days will come, and when they do you will have the time of your life. Travelling, in my experience, is good for the soul and you can't beat it. I think most of my best moments, best encounters and best friendships have come from travelling. :)))

Goodbyes are always the hardest part of any journey ..

You're right and I'm really crappy at them. It's really hard when the person you are saying 'goodbye' to means so much to you, like Julia does for me. And I still miss her even though we have been, more or less, in constant touch ever since. It's a strange thing.

Yeah it is. But at least you are in contact and you don't have to say goodbye forever. Have you known each other long?

Yes, we've know each other for over five years, helped each other through a few crises along the way and grown really close. It's odd to think that in spite of all that we only met for the first time a few days ago when I landed at St Petersburg. I'm a great believer that friendship can still be strong and caring even without having met, but having met is so much better and I think we both believe that we're now closer than ever as friends. It's something I'm very proud of. :)))

Thank you, that's one of the most wonderful comments I have ever had.
I suppose that, because I was going there for the first time not really knowing what to expect, it was all new to me and I was open to whatever came along. I'm always fascinated by places like this, not typically Russian, not typically European, not quite the east, not quite the west, just very different to anywhere else - wonderful! :))

Awesome pictures once again. Thank you so much for sharing them!

That said - I STILL have to post mine from my brief expedition to Marburg (the city I went to school and to university to) the other day ... woops.
