What do you do in syntax, anyway?

Well. We study the structure of language. Like, what is a phrase? What constitutes a phrase? How do you know? How would you diagram such a phrase? Why is a certain word considered an adjective? Do you have PROOF??? D: God, it's always about the proof. I HATE PROVING STUFF. I AM ALWAYS RIGHT, OKAY?!?

In short, syntax, and linguistics in general is like math with language. Equally baffling but slightly less wretched.
