So, I was going to post a whole ranty thing about stupid men who say stupid things and behave like creeps, and stupid straight people who say stupid homophobic things, and how much I hate the phrase "just happens to be gay" without being able to put my finger on why I hate it ( Read more... )

I recently got a young cat and she lives inside. It's important for her to have lots of play toys. We use a lot of homemade toys like curling ribbons (but that does lead to her thinking that sometimes other papers and things are her toys when they aren't). When she was younger she would run around the house a bunch but now that she is in her teenage phase she has settled down some. It does help though that we have another cat in the house - they keep each other occupied so that they are not lonely when we go out, and I think that can be really important. People think cats are self-sufficient and compared to a dog or a guinea pig or whatever they are, but the ones I have lived with really do like attention from people, even if it is just to be siting near their humans. In my experience though dogs are much more insistent and obvious with their requests for attention ( ... )

Oh, additional comments -

My cats have been spayed. Also they do tend to scratch our loveseat a bit but we don't have a tall enough scratching post for them to really stretch out enough. Declawing is really rather cruel so there's always the option of those little claw covers if scratching is a huge problem, but we've always been fine with trimming their nails regularly, plus the loveseat thing.
