What do I do all day?

As many of you probably know by now, my day job is programming computers. A year or so back, a non-technical friend, having got that question out of the way, followed up with "so what does that mean, then? What do programmers actually do all day?" This occurred at about 1am, and I wasn't exactly sober, so I did what any other programmer would. ( Read more... )

Thank you for this amusing and concise break-down of what programmers actually do!

I started an ET course many years ago on computer programming, but the only thing I learned on it was how spectacularly stupid computers really are, so I identified with that passage immediately!

It's a boring job, but someone's gotta do it, to paraphrase :)

Well, bits of it can be boring, but most of the time I find it quite fun. It's just one ginormous mental puzzle game.

Was your choice of example of real world task intentionally chosen to be so ironic. I suppose you could have had opening a can of Red Bull.

Not intentionally. Can't stand the stuff, meself. I probably picked it due to the subliminal influence of a programming course about 11 years ago (where the teacher came a cropper, because the people he picked to write the "make a cup of coffee" instructions were already fairly experienced as programmers, and proceeded to inflict "death by a thousand questions" in order to eliminate the ambiguities)
