Summary: Sam reflects on Ruby and his demon blood addiction. (Part 2 of the Lost Year 'verse)

Ask anyone who has ever tasted blood will most likely tell you that it tastes like salt. It leaves a coppery aftertaste that reminds one of canned black olives. Most people don't drink blood - normal people, at least. Oh sure, there are some nuts who think they're vampires and if they've got the cash to get their teeth altered and can find a supplier, they can live like one. Of course, there were real vampires who were nothing like the ones pictures in the movies and books, but just like most everything else hiding in the shadows, most people thought they didn't exist. Fictions brought on in part by people like Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker and the fire was only fed by the likes of Bela Lugosi, Wes Craven and Anne Rice. It was a good thing that at least aliens were fictional.

If aliens turned out to be real, Sam Winchester was convinced the world was screwed.

He was far to young to remember his first taste of demon blood. He supposed that was part of Azazel's idea. If he'd remembered the taste at six months, the hunger would have started then and never quit. Sam does however, remember his second.

Dean had been in Hell for two weeks and Sam was lost. Looking back, he knew he shouldn't have been surprised when Ruby found him. When she'd showed up at that abandoned house after he told her to get lost and return the woman she'd been possessing, he really didn't think she'd turn up again. But she had. Fucking bitch. He thought in his mind as he rubbed the bridge of his nose. He'd been seriously smashed at the time she'd found him. But that wasn't an excuse - he knew that now. At that time he'd been half crazed with grief that he'd have agreed to her help if he'd been stone cold sober. It was a whole month after that she mentioned a way for his powers to increase. The desire to kill Lilith had overridden his common sense and he'd agreed to it. He and Ruby were already sleeping together at that point... and the idea of drinking demon blood... at first it was repulsive and he was reluctant.

Just like all the other times she'd gotten him to do something that turned out to not be a good idea - she'd tricked him into it.

They'd been fucking. Long, drawn out, serious fucking. Running on adrenaline and lust that Sam couldn't even remember how it started - only that it ended with the two of them on the bed in that abandoned house. He'd driven her crazy to begin with - teasing her while he had her pinned to the mattress - getting her almost to climax and then tapering off -from hard and fast to soft and slow - she'd been begging towards the end. But he'd paid the price for it - in the throes of his own orgasm Ruby turned the tables and did the exact same thing to him. It was at the end of that post-coital bliss that he'd been lying on the bed, utterly spent and mostly unaware. He gave a non-committal grunt to her asking if he wanted some water. She'd traced the outline of his face with her fingers - and brushed one digit across his lips. He let out a contented sigh and might have fallen asleep if something wet hadn't been present the second time she did it.

The taste had been oddly familiar and yet wholly foreign at the same time. The liquid tasted vaguely like Dr. Pepper with the consistency of ketchup. Whatever it was, it had been nothing short of incredible. He'd latched onto her wrist, holding the ball of Ruby's thumb against his mouth as the liquid poured into his mouth and threatened to consume him. Sam had looked up at her at that point, his hazel eyes meeting her brown ones. She was smiling and stroking his hair. “That wasn't so hard, was it?”

In that first serving of her blood - Sam guessed he might have consumed a shot-glass worth of the wondrous liquid. How he felt afterwards was nothing short of indescribable. Power thrummed through his veins and reinvigorated him like the combined power of a hot shower, a straight ten hour sleep and four cups of good coffee. Ruby seemed determined to find out just how much the blood had done to him and, not having another demon handy to practice Sam's powers on - the two of them spent the rest of the night in bed.

The addiction had been bad - and going cold turkey to get off of it after Dean had killed Ruby had been hard. It was still hard. Especially when Sam remembers what the first taste always did whenever he uncorked the vial in his pocket or latched onto a vein. The feeling that it was so good, so right - so natural... The withdrawal... however - was pure agony. It was times when he was alone, like right now, that the urge to fall off the wagon and start drinking the blood again was almost unbearable. He couldn't quench it with booze - he'd tried. There was nothing that could fill the void... not entirely.

The scrape of plate on table brought Sam back to the present and out of his dark mood. He looked up at the waitress. “There are your bacon-cheese fries. You want a refill on that Dr. Pepper?”

He studied the woman for a minute. She was around twenty-six, blond hair, blue eyes and pleasant smile. He also noted she wore no rings on her left hand. “Yes, thank you.”

“Be right back.” She took the empty glass as Sam picked up the ketchup bottle and squirted a large amount into the corner of the basket of fries.

He pulled one potato from the mass and swirled it in the ketchup - Ruby used to call fries deep fried crack - and while eating fries makes him think of Ruby from time to time - they help keep him on the wagon.

The waitress came back and set his glass down and this time she lingers for a moment at the table, looking him in the eye. “My shift ends at ten.” Her voice was full of meaning and Sam knows that if she's any good at reading faces she'll know he's interested. She stepped away and went back to work.

Sam took a large gulp of Dr. Pepper, the sweetness contrasting with the salty remnants of the fry he just ate - he thinks of Ruby and all the pain, desire, lust and power he felt because of her.

It was comfort food indeed.
