I trotted onto the bridge to find Wash frantically flippin' switches and spinnin' dials on a control panel that was all lit up like a U-Day celebration. Zoe was standin' nearby, lookin' about as concerned as I usually see her, which was about not at all

"Wash, you wanna tell me why my ship's makin' such a ruckus?"
Yup, just like I figured. Anything went wrong with Serenity, Mal was always the first one on the bridge, if he could help it. You know, if he wasn't involved in some sort of discussion that involved small-arms fire and such. If I had to bet real coin on who'd be the next one through that hatch, my money'd be on Kaylee.
"Looks like some kinda huge power loss from the engines, Captain. I ain't your mechanic, but I'm betting we're gonna be needing to set down, and quick."
I clicked a few overhead switches, confirming that yep, it did seem as bad as it had a second ago.
"You know, before we fall out of the sky."

Kaylee made it through to the bridge in record time, almost skidding to a halt in order to keep herself from tumbling headfirst into the console. She took a couple steps back, alarmed at all of the red lights that had appeared. Red lights weren't good. Red lights were never good ( ... )

I sighed. Wash did have him a way with words. Sometimes, such a way that it made me want to strangle him. But then there would be the awkwardness, and the recriminations and Zoe's very large shotgun being applied to tender places on my body. And so, I kept my pilot around.
Halfway through my turn and just about to pronounce the "K" in "Kaylee", the girl appeared, nearly bowling me over. She burst into the cockpit, gave me and wash just a little more confidence in Serenity's ability to not drop like a rock, and disappeared for the engine room.
I put my hand on the back of Wash's chair and leaned towards the controls, racking my brain. Right. Now, I remembered the gorram station's name.
"Isis Station. It's about a 30 minute burn from here, as I recall. We can dock there. Surely the just-about most dangerous place for us to make ( ... )

I nodded to the Captain and started punching in the coordinates for Isis. Not being the biggest fan of things, I still kept my mouth shut. Okay, mostly.
"Isis Station it is, then. Uhh, Captain? Didn't a great many of us almost get sort of shot last time we were there?"
Mal gave me a sidelong glance that put a stop to my joke-making. Fair enough. I nudged the intercom switch that connected me down to the engine room.
"Kaylee, we're gonna need about thirty minutes of burn time, and then attitude thrusters after that for a station docking."
Crossing my fingers-- mental-wise, of course, as I couldn't rightly grip the control yoke very well with crossed-up fingers-- I hoped that we'd get enough out of Serenity's engines to get us safe. Wouldn't be very sporting of us to our pursuers to end up getting ( ... )

"Huh." Well, would wonders never cease. I didn't remember a blamed thing of that particular incident, beyond the angry voices and the whizzing little bits of metal that apparently were as aimed at my posterior as they were at my head.
Sounded like something I might do on U-day, and definitely like something Jayne Cobb would take plenty of pleasure in reminding me of in perfect detail.
"I still wanna know how it is you wrote 'ni ta ma de' on your own cheeks."
I grinned, despite the dire situation occurring around us.
"Well, I'm sure it was the work of some very nice young lady who--"
My timing being the impeccable thing that it is, Inara picked that exact moment to make her appearance.
"Perhaps it does not matter how are why it happened, only that it is now in the past. If the Captain believes it is in our best interest, then we should make our repairs quickly and move onto Greenleaf."Clearing my throat, I turned a more genteel ( ... )
