Holiday Ficlet #3: Tidings of Comfort (SS/HG, PG)

Dec 23, 2008 11:02

And here's today's installment of holiday fic! This is actually the only one that resolved itself into a drabble series, too. It was written for asperias, who asked for SS/HG and the best present for one of them. Well, asperias, I'm sure you probably had something more romantic than this in mind, but it was such a good prompt that it got me thinking about what ( Read more... )

Thank you! I'm so glad you like it. :-)

As for a sequel... hmm, I'd have to think about it. I did leave the ending rather open for a reason, because this felt like it might fit into a larger story... somewhere.

You've written Severus perfectly! Quick to presume offense only to soften on further reflection.

Wonderful!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this.

Quick to presume offense only to soften on further reflection.

I think that's an excellent description of Severus! He's very defensive, because his default assumption is that people are out to do their worst to him.

Ahhhh beautiful! At first I was unimpressed with the choice of a scarf and mitten set as the "best gift" cause you know its a rather generic gift. But looking at the gift through Snape's eyes changed my mind. Well done Blue.

Thank you! I actually chose the scarf and mitten set exactly because it is, at first glance, a very standard gift--exactly the sort of thing Snape would assume to be a pity gift from a well-meaning person. But knowing that there was thought and work put into something can make even the most humble gift very special, especially if it comes just when we need it the most. (And at this point in Snape's life, I think he's in dire need of having somebody stop and reach out to him, even if only for a moment.)

Indeed! And "best" is in how the gift makes us feel, more than anything. It's the thought, not the cost.

Awwww. I'm so glad Severus reconsidered. This gift was far too thoughtful just to be something for "a cause"!

And that last line is just perfect.

Thank you! Yes, he really should have known better than to think anybody, even Hermione, would go to that much thought for a pity gift--but then, he's prone to assuming the worst.

I'm so glad you liked that last line, because you have no idea how much time I spent writing and rewriting it. It took more time than anything else, because it wouldn't come out right!
