9 sounds like one of the Thursday Nexts by Jasper Fforde. Is it "Lost in a Good Book?"

It is Jasper Fforde, and it is Thursday Next, but it's a later book in the series: Something Rotten.

I ought to have trusted my brain twin instincts, because "Something Rotten" was my favorite of the Thursday Nexts, too. However, I allowed myself to second guess. Tsk tsk. ;D

I almost want an icon that says "Activate Brain Twin Powers!" :D

Somehow, I am totally unsurprised that we have the same favorite of the series. I'm not sure what sold me on it most: mopey Hamlet, the Old English swearing, the Swindon Super Hoop... hey, and it even has a chapter from Landon's POV, which is a nice change of pace.

~grins~ It's Something Rotten, by Jasper Fforde. Mun and Tudorpor got the right author and right series, but not the title. Then again, I'd have been hard-pressed to ID that exact book from this passage, too.
