Here is a pretty slick article about a pair of brothers who converted their 2003 VW Jetta TDI to run on veggie oil (not biodiesel.)

Yeah, the article mentions that, as long as you are equipped to filter the oil before putting it in your car, you can pretty much "dumpster dive" all the used oil you need from fast food restaurants and recoup your investment from not having to buy fuel within a couple of years. Not bad at all. I, too, have heard about the veggie oil cars smelling like french fries, but that wouldn't bother me.
