All things considered, Karen wasn't really that bad at cooking in general--it all came down to following instructions, and that was simple enough. The cake she was trying to make, as such, was looking very promising

Minako had told Karen she'd study and she had...for ten minutes before flinging the math workbook into a corner of the room and promising to get back at it after a snack. Really, staring at problems took a lot out of you. She bounced into the kitchen, the smile on her face growing wider when she saw Karen hard at work on the "cake".
Deciding to get married had been one of the more reckless things she'd done in her life, but she didn't regret it one bit. Like they said, "Gather the rose of love while you can," right? So she was determined to pluck it up while she could. Minako rested her chin on Karen's shoulder and peered into the bowl. "What are you making?"
Karen, having had a month to get used to living with Minako, didn't flail nearly as much at the sudden proximity as an outside observer might have expected. Nor did she even miss a beat. "It isn't a math cake."
Karen could have named at least six different instances of Minako letting her down in exactly this fashion off the top of her head... but there was no sense in trying to force it. She felt a brief twinge of guilt about that time with Nozomi. She had seemingly been doing better lately.
She looked towards Minako. "You really will, right?"
