Making out like a bandit

I went shopping today in Midtown, in large part for my dad's birthday card, the latest issue of Weird NJ, and the latest volumes (in English) of Battle Angel Alita: Last Order and Black Jack-all of which I ended up getting. There were a couple things I wasn't able to get as well, but let's not worry too much about those. During my excursion, I also did a bit of window shopping, and, while walking up 5th Ave., I decided, on a whim, to take a quick detour and check out the local Asahiya Bookstore, which I hadn't been to in awhile.

I am sooo glad I did that.

They were having a pretty kickass sale, and the very moment that I saw that they had all three of the Keroro Gunso vol. 17 limited editions for dirt cheap, I knew that today would be the day I finally, actually get them. Pack A was $10, Pack B was $20, and the Pack C I picked up was $10, though at least one other Pack C on display was marked $20. Considering that these boxes normally cost ¥2,500, ¥5,500, and ¥5,500 respectively, and always cost a bit more than that (comparatively speaking) at Asahiya due to their markup, I am very, very happy with this deal.

Asahiya also had a number of character design/model sheet books on sale. The only one I found remotely interesting was a Gurren Lagann one, which was $5.00. Those were the only things I got at Asahiya, but other sale items in the manga section included a few more limited edition bundles, a Lucky Star figure of all things (this store doesn't normally carry figures), and an enormous stack of Fullmetal Alchemist vol. 13 for $1.00 each (ETA: Forgot to note that these were all LE versions as well. Apparently, this volume comes with playing cards, but going by the slim packaging, it clearly isn't a whole deck). I swear, there were at least a hundred copies of that one manga, if not more.

I also picked up this week's Onion after a browse at Jim Hanley's Universe, and was given a flyer and pamphlet by some Lyndon LaRouche supporters somewhere around Union Square. I don't know anything about him, but I get the impression he's one of those crazy people. The pamphlet is titled "Down With the British Empire" (which, as a British person, I find a little amusing, and a little insulting) and has a picture of Obama with a Hitler moustache on the back; the flyer is titled "Is The Democratic Party Already Dead?" (yes, they capitalized "the"). I haven't read either; they both went straight in the recycling once I got home.

Oh, and also related (as far as figures and TTGL go), here's a CAG blog post I made last week about my most recent HLJ haul (and you'll also notice that I decided not to go with either Beatles box set). Their free express shipping offer was way too good to pass up :D

ETA #2: That explains it. Damn :'(

I thought it was a bit strange that their whole stationary section was cleared out...

figures, comics and manga, politics, shopping
