Interestingly there was a study during the 60s comparing equal numbers of troops firing it was found that, even though the M-16 spit far more slugs per minute than the 1858 Springfield Rifle (common Civil War weapon), the number of casualties caused remained basically the same.

100 troopers with M-16 would kill or injure X of the enemy.
100 troopers with 1858 Sprinfields would also kill or injure just X of the enemy.
