“You’re dressing up as elves again,” the studio assistant informs the group, as they step into the dressing room, greeting them with a wide, beaming smile that seems too bright for nine in the morning.
Kris stares at the familiar green fashion disaster that’s hanging from the dressing rack, and takes a step back hesitantly.
Sehun actually lets out an undignified squeak of horror.
“I knew we should have burnt these after that album's photo shoot,” Kyungsoo mutters under his breath.
For once, Kris agrees with him.

Thankfully, the whole thing is revealed to be prank, pulled as part of a ‘behind-the-scenes’ special of the show where they’ll be appearing on that day. Everyone manages to laugh it off, all except Kris, who’s beginning to find it harder to keep the smile on his face from turning into a frown. They’re overworked, and tired, and sometimes Kris wonders briefly if it’s all worth it.
He doesn’t get a chance to ponder these thoughts further, however, as they’re given new instructions for the main segment of the show, where they’ll be separated into pairs and trios, and interviewed by the show’s hosts.
Kris goes last, along with Suho, as the leaders of the group. He straightens his shoulders, mentally preparing himself as he’s ushered out of the dressing room.
Once their turn is over, Kris finds himself back in the dressing room with little to do to pass the time. Tao has disappeared, possibly captured by Kai and Sehun in one of their harebrained schemes to pull off another prank on unsuspecting SM trainees. The room is quiet, the silence punctuated occasionally by Suho’s giggles as he browses through the fan forums, and Lay’s snoring from where he’s sprawled across the couch, with his feet propped up on Suho’s lap.
Kris lays claim to the other couch, which is tucked away at one corner of the room. Once he's seated comfortably, he pulls out his mobile phone, selecting a game to play. He pokes at his screen for a few minutes, lost in concentration, until he hears footsteps approaching the room.
The door to the lounge opens. Kris ignores the sound, and stabs at a crudely pixelated cherry on his screen. Seconds later, he feels the couch dip slightly, and something blond and fuzzy is nudging its way onto his lap.
He looks down, just in time to catch a tired-looking Tao yawning, his mouth stretched wide, barely covered by the back of his hand. “‘m sleepy,” he mumbles. "When are we leaving this place?"
Kris glances at the clock on the wall. "Thirty minutes," he answers quietly, not wanting to disturb the other two. “I thought you went off with Kai and Sehun.”
“Changed my mind." Kris shifts in his seat slightly, causing Tao to frown up at him. "Pillows shouldn't move this much," he complains. The slight whine in his voice - instead of sounding annoying - makes him seem endearing and Kris can't help but grin at him fondly. He's about to tease Tao over it when his mobile phone chooses that very moment to emit an obnoxious noise, brought on by leaving his game idle for too long.
Tearing his gaze away, Kris scowls at the source of the interruption. He exits from the game and shoves the mobile phone aside, before turning his attention back on Tao.
Somehow, his fingers find their way towards Tao’s hair, and he idly plays with the stray strands. At his touch, Tao glances up at him, and Kris finds himself caught in one of Tao’s soulful gazes.
It’s not often that they get to spend a quiet moment like this, not when they’ve been caught up in promotions and radio interviews and awards shows of late. Living with ten other guys means having zero privacy, so when it’s the rare occasions like these that Kris appreciates, especially when it’s with Tao.
Tao, with his infectious laugh, the way his nose crinkles as he laughs at everything, the child-like appreciation he has for even the simplest things like a teddy bear or a new game. The way he demands all of Kris, his attention, his smiles - all of which Kris will give to him willingly.
"Get some sleep," Kris tells him. "I'll wake you up before we leave."
The grateful smile that Tao gives him warms his heart a little. It's a gentle sort of smile, the kind that he reserves only for Kris when the cameras aren’t rolling and there isn’t anyone around to see it. His hand moves, finding Kris’s. He laces their fingers together, before closing his eyes with a satisfied hum.
Kris watches him as he slips into sleep, feeling comfortable and fulfilled and happy. He realizes that for all his worries, all he has to do is to look at Tao to know that everything that they're going through is worth it.
It's not long before his own eyes grow heavy, lulled into sleep, one arm cradling Tao's head and the other caught in Tao's hold, and this is how the others discover them, fast asleep and tucked into each other, painting a rare quiet moment--
--until Kai pulls out his mobile phone and starts taking pictures, a mischievous grin on his face.
