I would really like to see a sequel to this if the muses are willing. I actually find your John easier to believe than canon John. To me, canon John is just to freaking inconsistent/wishy-washy. And your Dean is very believable, his brother comes first and at 26 being apart his dad and brother while Sam was at college, he's not the yes-man that John remembers from 4 years ago. Most excellent.

Wow. Just wow.
Smart!Dean is the HOT!ness. Who knew that reading Dean analysing and putting things together like a puzzle pieces can get me as hot and bothered as porn.

I would really, really love for the show to do a plot that requires the boys to show the smarts like this - and not just Sam, Dean too. I mean c'mon, they must have learn something a bit more than just how to kill things under their Dad, especially since John is supposed to be the master of these kinds of puzzle-fittings.

I really love this! EXCELLENT characterization!

but it still bothered him that he couldn’t discern the message in Dean’s barely perceptible tilt of his head. Sam, though, took his water and left without a word.

THIS is the best! Dean doesn't keep Sam 'under control' but they do have a secret language, and Sam will follow Dean's lead.

Thanks for this!

Thank you! That line pretty much sums up their relationship for me, so I'm glad it jumped out at you. I appreciate the comment on characterization too--I was a little surprised to find myself writing John fic.

Hi, I just read "Rite Of Passage" and decided to read the rest of your fic and here I am again, almost exactly a year later!

I just wanted to say that the reason I totally felt that John was in character in this, is that he has an unbelievable conceit in his own power to protect his boys, and his own decisions as to what can be sacrificed for their safety.

Therefore, with himself and Dean there to protect Sam, John would honestly believe that Sam would be okay, and disregard all evidence to the contrsry as 'acceptable risk'. For John, it is this demon which is the main threat to his boys, Sam in particular, so elimination of the demon is his highest priority. Use Sam as bait? Sure, if it's the only way to kill the demon, because killing the demon is the only way to truly make sure that Sam is safe.

JUst wanted to spell that out, I guess. Anyway, it's still an excellent story, and thanks!

I love Dean's characterisation here, he's both smart and honest, sometimes brutally honest. I think John is a little harsher than in the show, but as other's have said the show is a little inconsistent in its portrayal of John. I can totally see him using Sam as bait because he would argue (at least in his own mind) that he was there and wouldn't let anything happen to him. Both John and Sam showed that they were willing to sacrifice themselves to get the YED.

Just to let you know, I'm doing a Dead Man's Blood fic rec at spn_epific today and I'm including this there.

Thank you for the comments, and the rec. John's hard to get a handle on. I've been liking him less and less as the series goes on, but I agree this is one thing he probably wouldn't do. Probably. He can be a jerk, but not necessarily in this way.

Thanks again!
