I was thinking tonight about how the stories we collect around ourselves relate to our understanding of the world. How they simultaneously reflect and form our belief systems, thoughts, and feelings.

hmmm, i can definitely relate to the unrequited and tragic theme. i'm a sucker for a beautifully told narrative of loss.

The Cure featured prominently in the soundtrack of my teenage years. As did all the Indigo Girls' sad love songs (a cliche, but there you are). Now I lean more towards Billie Holliday, Patsy Cline, and the Cowboy Junkies - it's still all about the (mostly tragic) love songs for me.

In other genres, I'd have to say Bastard out of Carolina is huge for the tragic betrayal at the end - the mother who loves Bone but can't save her. And as for love stories, Mama Day and Jazz are two of my favorites for the rip-your-heart-out loss.

When I was in high school, my favorite movie was Pump Up the Volume, which pretty much tells you everything you need to know about my attitude towards authority, desire for rebellion, and love of the sexy quiet nerdy type. For most of my 20s, my fave film has been Antonia's Line for the gyno-power and incorporating all the beauty and tragedy of life in one film ( ... )
