General Canon Information |
Character Canon History (WiP) Son and heir of a rather wealthy family in his world, Kiriha has been drilled to be strong from the day of his birth. While his mother ‘spoiled’ him, his father seemed to consider him a disappointment - often telling him that weakness is evil and only the strong are worth anything in the world and never leaving him with proof of love to his son.
After his father dies of sickness and his father's subordinates betray him over his inheritance and leave him with nothing, a devastated Kiriha swears off all weakness and promises to become strong at all costs - stronger than his father had been, so that he could never be betrayed again . He closes of his heart, becoming rather prideful, cold and reserved, reluctant to let anyone close. Due his stand-offish attitude, he is avoided by his class- and school mates, who often whisper about him and his cold heartedness behind his back.
Though Kiriha doesn’t show it, deep down he is bothered by it, as despite his oath to himself, deep down he still craves to form bonds like everyone else. It is then, that he is found by one of the Keyblade Masters, who senses the strength of his heart and conviction and offers to train him as one of their own.
Kiriha accepts, considering that his chance to fulfill his father’s wishes and gain the strength he had always been meant to have, and becomes a Keyblade Student in the order of the Trinity Knights, rising to the rank of apprentice just before the start of the game.
Personality:
Originally a rather sensitive child, Kiriha was extremely shaped by the death of his father, who left him the words that would become his own philosophy: “Weakness is evil. Being strong is the only way to heal the pain.”
Taking him by word, Kiriha grew up to despise those who show weakness of any kind (and especially his own). Friends, comrades, allies… they are all convenient to a point (which is why he has no qualms proposing or entering an alliance as equal or superior), but the moment his ‘partner’ shows weakness or gets in the way of his strategy, he will discard them, humans and Digimon alike.
This trait gives him a cold, rather dark and cruel edge (sometimes radiating from him as what Taiki describes as “black feeling”) and he is often described as or called out for being cold-/ice hearted (which interestingly enough seems to bother him a little, especially when it comes from Nene).
He refuses to step down and help those too weak to help themselves - especially when they are not even trying - most likely because he sees his younger self in them and despises them and himself for showing weakness.
However, he has no trouble recognizing and acknowledging an approach, a strength, different to his own - though he asks Taiki to become his subordinate, he never traits him as anything but his equal and never criticizes his tactics as weak or foolish. ´He eventually recognizes him as his rival and after Taiki’s return to the Digital World (he had been sent back to the human world) he (reluctantly and at Nene’s nudging) agreed to enter the Xros Heart United Army.
Kiriha and Nene share an rather interesting relationship, especially after their short alliance. He acknowledges her as strong and considers her similar to himself (as she also gained strength through pain). During their alliance he seemed to be almost subordinate to her and even later he tends to listen to her suggestions (for example working with Taiki rather than trying to outdo him when Tactimon attempts to take both their Code Crowns). He also seems a bit protective of her (actually to a point where even Taiki comments on it: “You are always reckless when it comes to Nene.”)
He is good at estimating situations and/or people, wary of fully trusting Nene even during their alliance and commenting on Taiki’s creative use of strategy but lack of power during the battle of the island zone. He also has no trouble figuring out Splashmon, when he tries to mislead him by taking Taiki’s form.
The one thing Kiriha values more than anything else is his pride. It is that part of him that refuses to step down even in the face of certain defeat, that also causes him to break off his alliance with Nene when she is still figurehead of Team Twilight as he refuses to fight and/or torture obviously already defeated enemies. However that pride easily turns into a two-edged sword, since Kiriha tends to become arrogant when dominating an enemy, but quickly loses all confidence in himself if the situation turns on him all of sudden.
Beneath his cold demeanor he is rather insecure - doubting himself and his digimon and hating himself for that weakness. That insecurity also stems from his issues with his father, whom he despises as Kiriha feels he never regarded him as strong in his own right.
He mellows a lot between the two halves of the series, mostly because his pride takes a sharp blow in the Dragon Land when he finds himself unable to move on due the area’s Death General, Dobrickmon. While he is rather hesitant to call anyone a friend, he is shown to be far more protective of his own Digimon, he is reluctant to let Greymon and MailBirdramon fight after they were gravely wounded by an encounter with Dobrickmon and almost at the edge of despair when MetalGreymon is absorbed by NeoVandemon where previously, when Greymon and MailBirdramon fell down a rift in Disc Zone, he appeared rather unbothered (even going as far as stating that he won’t hesitate to abandon them if they aren’t strong enough to return by themselves).
He still tends to set off when he finds himself dissatisfied by Taiki’s decisions, but always finds himself drawn back to the group and at those rare moments when he allows himself to relax, Kirha is shown to have quite a dry humor, even friendly teasing Taiki. It still might take him a bit to truly admit to himself what Taiki and Nene mean to him, but deep down he already considers them his friends.
In UW, due his changed history, Kiriha will act a little more reserved than arrogant, though he will never lose his prideful edge. Despite everything the order might have taught him, deep down, he still considers his father’s words to be the ultimate truth and lives by them.
He works hard to meet the expectations of the Masters and himself and gains far more self control, which makes him far less liable to the sudden breakdowns of his canon self.
Even so, the darkness in him remains, as he constantly fights doubts in himself and his path towards strength, secretly hating his father for pushing him onto this path and yet yearning to gain his approval even though he has no chance of ever receiving it.
Abilities: Kiriha particularly excels at the Fire Spell Family - even though they curiously color blue rather than red. He also does well with ice, lightning and wind elements. But as well as he does with offensive magic, he is rather bad at using status spells (such as Sleep and Confuse) and can barely manage to cast Cure.
He has yet to realize how to actively tap into the darkness and use its powers, but once he has, Kiriha won’t probably rest until he has mastered it as well.
Skills: In his training, Kiriha has primarily focused on physical skills and offensive magic, considering both to be essential in order to gain the strength that he craves. In combat, he primarily relies on speed as he uses hit-and-run-tactics in order to stay out of his opponents reach. As Keyblade Student he has yet to receive his own Keyblade, but is working hard in order to change that.
Weaknesses:
Physical: Though Kiriha has average height and weight for his age group and is rather quick and flexible in battle, he still has to be very careful, because despite his speed and strength, he has a rather low defense and could be taken easily by only a few hits if he allows his opponent the opening.
Mental: Even though he appears very prideful and confident, deep down Kiriha often doubts and loathes himself, as he considers himself unable to become the person his father is expecting him to be. Since he bottles up those feelings and often doesn’t even acknowledge their existence, he tends to have sudden break downs, especially in moments of defeat and shock, freezing and holding himself totally open for attack.
Magical: As already mentioned, Kiriha is very weak at status effecting magic and almost absolutely unable to cast healing spells. Later have been blocked by his own mind set and he would become able to learn spells beyond Cure, if he ever were to realize the worth of comrades and friendship and give up on his quest for absolute strength.
Light, Darkness, or In-Between: Being from the realm of light, the love for his parents burns brightly in Kiriha’s heart - even though he would deny anything except hate for his father, if ever confronted about it. However his own doubts and the cruelty he displays when crazed by power both shadow his heart. Due this, while he is still rooted in the light, he is sliding more and more towards the Darkness.
Sample: There was something final about standing here, in front of his parents' graves. It is necessary though, necessary to close that chapter of his life; not forget - never forget - but to distance himself.
The pain of his past was what made him strong, what held his resolve firm and unbreakable, especially now that he had been given this offer... the opportunity to gain true strength. He was not going to pass it up - he would see what he could learn from this people, what strength he could gain in other worlds, move on if their strength turned out to be a sham and find another way.
He had already told the Master that he would only give those oaths for the sake of strength alone, not because of some noble notion of "protecting the worlds" and "keeping things in balance". Weakness was evil after all, better off destroyed than kept around and Kiriha certainly had better things to do than to protect those too weak to take care of themselves.
He clenched his hands to fists, eyes narrowing as he swore: He would become stronger than his father ever had been.
'Just watch me, old man.' he thought, glaring down at him, though his gaze softened when he turned to his mother.
'You too.', he thought, absently reaching up to touch the locket hidden beneath his shirt. 'I won't let you down this time, Mother. I'll be strong enough to defend myself.'
With that he turned abruptly from the graves, hand still on the locket, the only memory he would allow himself to take from this world.
He would never return to this place.
Instead he would only look to the future, would seek to gain strength until he would never lose to anybody ever again. There was no turning back, not now, not ever again.
