And, as long as you're making *any* payment at all, I don't believe they can send you to collections or actually affect your credit that badly. If you can, just pay the interest so it doesn't keep accruing.
Alternately, have you and Laure thought about filing for bankruptcy? You may want to look into it. And don't think of it as failing as a grownup - Himself's sister did it, and for whatever it's worth, my mum has too. It'll wipe out your bad credit and get rid of the monthly payments you can't afford so you can start putting $$ toward fixing up the house.
