My post today comes courtesy of a comment I left on vidaliasparkle's LJ re her father going to Iran. I've been talking her ear (eye?) off, so now please allow me to do it to you too, dear reader. You know, I once had this Iranian friend and we got on like a house on fire, but then we had the most stupid falling-out (we never really defined what happened - it was ( Read more... )

A nice Iranian lady studying at the college where I worked a few years ago burned me a CD of one of Googoosh's recent albums. I was touched by her kindness, but wasn't sure I'd care much for the music (You know how it is when people push tunes on you). Imagine my surprise when I discovered I actually like it! Googoosh has a pretty amazing voice, I must say.

Roger Cohen of the NY Times recently wrote an opinion piece about Iran's Jews that was widely slammed for being too credulous. Makes interesting reading, anyway.

Thanks for those articles. I shared them with a friend of mine who is very curious about such situations, not least because she's developed a massive attraction for this Palestinian-Aussie aka HYA (Hot Young Arab) and has had her eyes forever opened to a whole new spectrum of religious-political scenarios that never before pertained to her or anyone she knew. Can't wait to discuss Mr Cohen with her. So far she's only committed to calling him "brave" to write the article. I think she fears she might offend me! (ME? What have I got to do with Cohen?) But she's very diplomatic that way!
