Okay, I'm not all that anti-America, but even I can't resist the urge to say "that's fucked-up Americans for y'all". IDIODS. (not all of you though, but i think you get what i mean here)
If the articles pertained only to China or Iran and not the US, I'd have the same *head desk* reaction.
I'm just very strongly opposed to the death penalty anywhere.
I'm proud that the death penalty has been abolished in my country and that it its abolishment is part of our constitution but I am worried that recent polls showed that a growing number of French actually are in favor of the death penalty.
I know what you're saying. I worked with Amnesty for quite a while, and one of their number-one anti-torture opinions is that the death penalty should be abolished. I'm glad that it is in my country too.
I'm gonna be honest and say that a couple of years ago I wasn't leaning in either direction regarding the matter. I was all "not in my country, I'm not directly afflicted and therefore not obligated to care" but then the thought just occurred to me -- if it was one of my family members serving time (no matter what crime) and they were up on death row, how would I feel about that?
After that, I decided I'm against it. Simple as that.
I just think it's such a typical American thing too; not thinking beyond the borders of laziness. Everything's not gold and green and money, damnit. Fuckers.
