I wish Australia would get into Halloween more, for all the reasons you list. Here it's usually put down as being just an American import, but I think most cultures around the world have a "let's talk about death" event, don't they? Dios de la Muertos, I'm sure that there's a Chinese ancestors thing, and so on.

i love halloween and am sad i won't be throwing a party this year. but oh well, it'll be fun to give out some candy....
