Chatting on Yahoo?

Jul 08, 2006 08:00

After some nap time in this heat, another annoying "conversation" on Yahoo Messenger. Is there nothing but nutters, bores, married cheaters and pervs on the thing anymore? I have no idea where they all come from and why they feel compelled to talk to me. What I do know is that I'm tired of every single one of them. Does this happen to all the ( Read more... )

I stopped using yahoo for that very same reason. Where do all these people come from and how do they get our usernames?
I also get tons of messages in Arab, do you ever get those?

I do have a profile etc so my presence there is quite public. I put my info up as I'd really like to meet some new people but... well, see above, at least for the most part.

Yes, I get tons of Arabs too who are often just looking for female contacts to marry so they can help them get to Europe or the US (ever been proposed to online by a stranger? lol). I also tend to be their "preferred" type visually so that's been errrrrrr... interesting, to say the least. On the up side, there've been a couple of really genuine and nice people from that part of the world as well, so... =) Overall though I really wonder what has changed on Yahoo and turned it into such a freak show.

I've gotten marriage proposals myself... hahahaha how funny! There's one I don't forget, called Fortune John who kept praising the Lord and thanking God and all the saints for putting me in his path. I still have an email he sent me, for entertainment purposes hahaha. Crazy people!

Oh, I know what you mean. Before I was using icq quite a lot, but stopped of the exact same reason as you mention.

Yes, I actually went back to Yahoo *from* ICQ as all I ever got there were weird characters. How ironic. Heh. Where do you go to meet people to chat with - or do you?

I don't really chat anymore, I guess because there was never anyone interesting to talk with, it was always about photos and things like that. I guess livejournal has also taken some of the place, because even though it is the same as chatting, you get to know new interesting people!

Where does one meet some new, normal but non-boring people to chat with these days?

Aren't normal and non-boring mutually exclusive?

You could create your own custom filter, like Sifter (which was originally posted in the print version of the San Diego Reader) or Hike the Geek, that sort of thing.

I'm curious, if you did, how would it read? I.e., what are you really looking for?

Well, of course. "Normal" per se is relative and often boring. In this case I simply meant non-perv/freakish-only-there-for-imbecile-sex-chat. I'm not interested. It's pathetic, and so disgustingly unclassy.

You asked what I'm looking for... Hmm. I'm looking for some non-stupid people that I can actually relate to. Most characters on those chat things now can't hold a conversation to save their lives. They answer in 1-liners and just want quote, "more pictures!!" That's especially classic when (other than me) they don't even have a single photo of themselves online. Broader horizons are good too (but for that, I seem to be in the wrong country...). Do I sound arrogant? Pissed off? I'm really neither, I just tend to be frank. Heh. What are you looking for? Anything? =)

Thanks for the links, I'll have a look at them.

I guess that's what happens when people grow up communicating with their thumbs. (Blackberry Thumb move aside--now there's Blackberry Brain...)

I look for similar things, and a bit more: I like people who recognize and embrace their power to improve their world through creativity and effort. Those are the ones I find non-boring. And, alas, it's definitely not the norm.
