This is lovely. It was pretty painful to read, but it made the ending so much more poignant- my eyes were sorta pricking for a moment there.

Thanks for such a nice comment! I have very mixed feelings about war -- I grew up in a military household, but my father never glamorized anything. In general, I think war is terrifying, and I'm glad that came across.

Oh wow, that was so touching! Jack's humanity always shines through the cracks.

Thank you.

Aww, thanks for reading!
I think Jack has to guard himself a lot because of all that he's lived through. It's nice when he can lean on someone else!

Oh Jack, you really need to work on your self esteem issues ;)

As per usual, lovely and that moment of Jack thinking it might have been Gwen who died out there brought the horror and senselessness of war to the fore.

Yeah, Jack knew, on an intellectual level, that it couldn't have been Gwen, but in that situation, you see someone that looks like someone you love, and you freak out. Poor Jack! He was really thrown for a loop. Luckily, he got a little R&R afterward. :)

Thanks so much! I had wanted to do something, however brief, about Jack's life as a soldier, and the prompt made me think of it.
