Melinda Evans loves her new baby. The little boy is beautiful, it's true. (Given the father, he should be. The man had nothing else to recommend him.) And he's so well-behaved. Everyone says first children are always easy. She's glad she has Evie as a model on television: she'd never know what to do if she didn't have Jane Kendell to show her how to change diapers, or how to calm the baby when it cried, or how to read the different screams for food or sleep or just plain loneliness

But she just turned to press a kiss to his cheek, saying only, "But they need me, too. I'll be back as soon as I can. Promise. Besides, this'll be good practice for you. You've seen how things are done often enough. I have faith in your ability." With a quick smile to him and a squeeze of his hand, she rushed out the door
