Halloween 1993 Sachs household Andy’s bedroom
Eleven year old Andy Sachs was standing in front of a mirror adjusting her witches costume. Andy had been dressing up like a witch every year since she could remember. She had the pointy hat, dark stockings, and red ruby slippers. Her favorite movie was the Wizard of Oz. Andy’s broom stick was leaning up against the wall.
Last year Halloween had been on a week day and Andy wasn’t allowed to take the broom to school. This year it was on a Saturday and Andy was excited to be going trick or treating with her friends. Her best friends Dougie and Lily were dressing up like Darth Vader and a cheerleader. They were finally deemed old enough by the parental units to go trick or treating without adult supervision. Andy’s mom walked in the room as she put the finishing touches to her witches make up.
Harriet Sachs looked a little annoyed. “Andy couldn’t you go dressed as something else this year?”
Andy rolled her beautiful brown eyes. “I love being a witch mom.”
Harriet made Andy look into her eyes, “Andy you can dress up as anything you want to be. Just because you are a witch you can be anything you want to be.” Harriet Sachs had always taught her daughter just like her mother before her to respect magic in all its forms and their own special powers. “Remember that year when you dressed up as Robin Hood?”
”That was first grade mom.” Andy let out a big breath blowing her bangs off her forehead. “I’m not a little girl anymore.”
“You’ll always be my little girl,” Harriet sighed. She remembered sewing the costume. She had even made a quiver for the plastic arrows out of a Pringles can. Andy had loved Disney’s Robin Hood that year until she saw The Wizard of Oz. These days she seemed almost obsessed with the fact that their family were witches. Andy was alright with keeping it a secret. Halloween was the only time Harriet would let her dress up because if she could Andy would do it every day.
They walked downstairs. “Be back by eight thirty.” She watched as Andy proudly walked down the street to Lily’s house carrying her plastic pumpkin for candy in one hand and her broom in the other. Other kids were starting to go from house to house. It was a beautiful autumn day in Ohio.
As she walked to Lily’s house she thought about her friends. Andy loved being friends with Lily and Dougie. Their families had witches and wizards in them too. Lily and Dougie were also a witch and wizard too. It was hard sometimes keeping the secret that magic was real. But having two wonderful friends had helped. As Andy was about to ring the doorbell to Lily’s house the door swung open and she heard Lily squeal. “Let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go,” Lily’s mantra as she grabbed Andy’s arm and pulled her down the sidewalk. Lily was a blur of purple and gold and pom poms as she dogged other trick or treaters still pulling Andy with her.
“We’re meeting up with Dougie at Ryan’s house,” Lily said as she still lead the way. Ryan was Andy’s crush at the time and she was always a little nervous around him, something that Lily knew. Lily’s special powers had manifested around the same time as her friends. She was able to sense what others were feeling and sort of sooth them at the same time. Lily was always a calming presence to those in her life before this, so none were surprised when her powers developed that way. The younger the witch or wizard, the weaker the powers and the control they had over those powers. Lily couldn’t get her parents to let her get her ears pierced, but she could often get Dougie and Andy to see things her way without any arguments.
“Aren’t we going to stop for any candy,” Andy looked mournfully towards the adults handing treats out at the houses they were quickly passing up.
“No time, we’re almost there anyway.” It was only five thirty! Surely Lily could stop a few times before going to Ryan’s house Andy thought as she was dragged. Ryan’s parents were out of town for the weekend. He was a sophisticated man of 13 on the block and was having a Halloween party. The girls reached Ryan’s house and went around to the fence at the back yard.
Lily knocked three times in a row. A disembodied voice asked,“What’s the password?”
“Porkchop,” Lily succinctly answered.
“And who is Porkchop?”
Now Lily rolled her eyes. “It’s Doug from the tv show’s dog.” It was probably a good thing that Lily’s power wasn’t that she was able to kill with her voice, Andy thought. Lily hated the Doug show. Mainly because she had a friend named Doug and she would have rather watched a show called Lily. The kid on the other side of the fence must have sensed her irritation too, because the fence door opened to reveal a pale vampire with thick glasses they knew to be a kid from school named Billy.
“Hey Lily, hey Andy,” Billy said. He kept talking as Lily led Andy into the party. “My next question was gonna be, ‘Who is Doug’s girlfriend.’”
“I hate that show.” Lily muttered as she ignored Billy, who had harbored a crush on Lily since the first day of kindergarten. The girls walked towards a group of kids near a picnic table covered with chips and sodas. Andy and Lily could see kids dressed up as clowns, ghosts, skeletons, princesses, Barbie, Jason, and Freddy surrounding two kids fighting.
Han Solo (aka Ryan) was sitting on and pummeling Darth Vader’s (aka Dougie) back. Lily and Andy were shocked. Dougie’s Darth Vader mask helmet had flown off and his face was in the grass. Dougie was a little chubby compared to the other kids, and usually picked on, but so far Ryan had left him alone. He had been relatively nice to the three of them. Hearing a whimper from their friend prodded Lily into throwing her pom poms at Ryan’s face. Ryan was surprised enough for Dougie to get up. Andy saw the bruise on his face and her eyes turned dark. The air around the back yard started to get very cold.
“Are you hurt,” Lily was asking Dougie. He held his right arm close to his chest and mumbled something in return and then they both looked at Andy recognizing the electricity in the air.
“We just had a little argument, but things are alright now aren’t they Dougie?” Ryan the sauve pretty boy with his curly brown hair liked Andy even though he wasn’t wild about her hanging out with another guy. He had tried to get dorky Dougie to leave before she showed up. Ryan looked at Andy, who’s hair had started to literally started to stand on end. “You okay baby?”
“Don’t call me baby,” she said through clenched teeth and with a glare. Finally her control popped and with it all fifteen of the sodas on the picnic table which Ryan happened to be standing next to. The lights lining the fence around the back hard all started to shatter one by one. All the kids started to run away from the yard-Ryan included--not quite sure what was happening. That left the three friends alone as Andy calmed down.
Lily approached her friend slowly. Andy was standing still and taking deep breaths, just like her mother had taught her. “Wow Andy, I had no idea you had that much power.” All three friends looked at each other, smiled and laughed. “Well Andy and Dougie, there’s still time to get some candy,” Lily laughed at how bright Andy’s eyes became.
“Guys, do me a favor from now on,” Andy and Lily looked at him as he spoke. “Don’t call me Dougie anymore.” Now they laughed again as they walked out of Ryan’s back yard. Andy, Lily and Doug were true best friends. Halloween wasn’t a complete bust that year.
Halloween 1998 Sachs household Andy’s bedroom
“This Halloween sucks,” said sixteen year old Doug, who was sitting in Andy’s old bean bag chair looking through teen People. Doug had gotten taller and lost his baby fat but was now sporting a serious case of acne. He would have had low self esteem if his power had developed so well evidenced as he teleported from the room then back holding a soda.
“Doug, mom doesn’t want you doing that in the house.” Andy and Lily hadn’t even batted an eyelash as they were used to his power by now. Doug had started out small and now was able to teleport a mile from the neighborhood under the guidance of his father.
Andy and Lily were sitting Indian style on the floor, Lily painting Andy’s fingernails purple. Andy’s small tv was on Vh1 with The Rocky Horror Picture Show playing with the volume turned down. Doug changed the channel to MTV and watched the Back Street Boys video for a minute. The first in a series of books, Harry Potter was laying nearby. All three had been fascinated to read the “fantasy.”. They were all convinced that JK Rowling was indeed a witch.
“All of these boy bands trying to sex up the girls are probably gay.”
“Why are you in such a bad mood Doug?” Lily asked. After years of using her power to sooth people her friends had become immune, so she was unable to help them. She was done painting Andy’s nails and Andy was holding her hands out to dry.
“I’m just bored,” Doug whined. “Can’t we do something fun?”
Lily had an idea brewing. “Hey Andy don’t you have an old Ouija board?”
“I think it’s under the bed. It was my grandma’s,” Andy replied then blew on her fingernails.
“Well let’s get it out,” Doug looked under the bed and pulled out a long thin wooden box. He opened it up and pulled the board out. The board itself was made out of a dark almost black wood, the silver lettering had been stenciled on it. The planchette, the little circular thing that a person moves around to letters and numbers was made out of a blue crystal glass.
“It’s really pretty Andy,” Lily complimented as she ran her hand over it.
“Well my grandma made it herself, so she could have also added some interesting features. What do you want to know Doug?” Andy stayed a foot away still letting her purple nails dry.
Doug always got in a playful mood when they dealt with anything magical. He shared a grin with Lily, “Let’s find out who Andy has a crush on.” Together he and Lily started to move the planchette across the smooth Ouija board. This would be fun because Andy had been harboring a secret crush and neither of her friends new who it was.
Andy made an indignant sound and flapped her hands trying to decide whether it was too soon to get up from her position to stop them.
Doug and Lily watched entranced as the planchette was guided. Out loud Doug repeated each letter, “J..... E...... N..... N..... ----“
“Alright! Stop, I’ll tell you! It’s Jennifer Daniels from home room,” Andy blurted out. Doug and Lily looked at her amazed at the accuracy of the board-since they really hadn’t known-and the jaw dropping info that Andy was crushing on a girl!
Andy looked like she was about to cry so Lily went over and put her arm around her shoulder. “Hey it’s alright Andy. You guys know my older sis is gay. We just didn’t know about you. Why didn’t you tell us?”
Andy still looking at the floor, but no longer crying, “I just wasn’t sure how you guys would react. I kind of like guys and girls.”
“We’re your best friends Andy,” Doug was smiling. “You can always tell us anything. Why don’t you ask Jennifer out?”
“You guys! I don’t even know if she’s gay,” Andy almost shrieked.
“Well let’s ask the board,” was Doug’s helpful answer.
“I’m just gun shy after my breakup with Matt last year,” Andy explained. She looked over at her grandma’s old Ouija board, a little more interested and said, “Let’s find out what my soul mate will be like.” They were all curious so they gathered around the board together. Lily reached over and grabbed a notebook and pen so she could write out the letters.
“How will I know who my soul mate is,” Andy asked and they moved the planchette around it spelled out the letters b-i-r-t-h-m-a-r-k. “This is kind of crazy,” Andy admited.
“No I think it’s real stuff, so let’s not stop yet.” Doug asked, “What kind of birthmark?” At this point the planchette had started to move by itself, which since Andy’s grandma was a powerful witch wasn’t so surprising. The board spelled out h-e-a-r-t. “Oh good,” said Doug. Now where is it located.” Doug was really into it now. This time it spelled out l-e-f-t-b-r-e-a-s-t. All three friends cracked up laughing at this.
“Andy,” Lily snorted, “Now all you have to do before you go out with someone is ask to see their left breast.” They all laughed til Andy had tears running out of her eyes.
“Hey let’s ask what your soul mate’s name is Andy,” Doug suggested. The planchet was already moving and got as far as M-I before the door to Andy’s bedroom opened.
Andy’s mom poked her head in and whipped into the room and grabbed the Ouija board before it could finish spelling out the name. “I thought this was locked up in the attic. You kids know not to play with something like this. Really Andy I know I’ve taught you not to play with enchanted objects.” Andy looked a little ashamed, she had smuggled the board from the attic to investigate a few months ago. Harriet was not happy and all three friends knew if Harriet Sachs wasn’t happy no one was happy.
“We really didn’t get very far Mrs. Sachs,” said Lily trying to placate with her voice and with her power.
Harriet’s stance relaxed a little bit. “Well I’m getting rid of it anyway. You guys can order a pizza if you want,” she said as she walked out of the room with the board.
“Whew, that was a close call,” Doug said. “Well Andy, maybe the name could be Michael or Michelle.”
Andy laughed. She loved her friends. “Let’s just worry about pizza.”
