Fuck Ron Paul

May 15, 2008 17:45

I was listening to Ron Paul on NPR yesterday while driving.  I was listening to him talk about the Republican party, and I was trying to remember why I thought he was such an odious political figure.  I didn't necessarily disagree with what he was saying about the American political system.  But then someone asked him about his stance on abortion ( Read more... )

I wonder if he's pandering on that one. It's so hard for me to believe that someone would be truly pro-small-government and still anti-choice.

But then, I always give people the benefit of the doubt. :P

He is very very very anti-choice. Also anti-gay. And also very truly for small government. Actually more like "for 18th century government". I've followed his record in the House for a long time, and he is all of those things.

I'm curious- does his vote go the small government way? Does he support legislation that gives people the right to make choices he personally disagrees with on the basis of civil liberty or does he support legislation that is more in keeping with his personal views?

His run is not over. He never had even the slightest chance of winning, so that never changed. However, once the rest of the contest was settled (among the candidates who did have a chance), it actually kind of gave his campaign new life. He's still running, and getting higher percentages of the vote since McCain clinched the nomination. Also, in states that had caucuses, the actual national delegates are selected at a state convention that happens later on, and Ron Paul supporters who were elected at the precinct caucuses in those states (the event that got all the press) are out-organizing other candidates at the state conventions (and also, I suspect, showing up in greater numbers, while some of the other candidates' people stay home) with interesting effects. I think the reason you originally thought he was an obvious asshole may have been related to his racist newsletter.

yeah, see, I have to wonder why there are all these stickers out there that say 'Ron Paul Revolution' with the 'evol' part reversed to spell love. Have you seen those? What is the basis for that? Further, there's hardly anything revolutionary about his politics OR personal beliefs.

And he's an ob-gyn, which just kind of makes him really creepy. Like, who would want to shake his hand while campaigning, you know?
