I can just imagine small, scruffy, on-guard Estel. And the apprehension of adult Aragorn as to just what his friend is going to say about that small guard.

I like your take on Thranduil, too - I think of him as a good father and as such I think he would see the earnest little boy rather than the outer untidiness.
