Mark Reads

As many of you know, "Mark Reads Harry Potter", which started off life as a blog called "Mark Reads Twilight" (although perhaps "rips apart Twilight" would have been more accurate) has morphed into just "Mark Reads" and he is now tackling The Hunger Games Trilogy. See...I thought because of the genre and the way the series was written that Nathaniel was "safe as houses" in The Bartimaeus Trilogy and, while I loved the series as a whole, I really despised the ending. Really.

My qualm? Chapter headings. I like that George Martin has POV chapter headings rather than specific (or semi-specific) chapter headings in a fantasy book. Even the most general chapter name can give me more than I wanted to know.

Just number the things and that's fine with me....

True, chapter titles can be spoilers big time, and if they're not, then they can end up being kind of cryptic and head-scratchy and therefore a distraction. It's a real balancing act to avoid either extreme if you're not going to go with just numbers. I like to try to find chapter titles that can be taken in multiple ways. My favorite of JKR's that works like this is "The Other Minister" at the beginning of HBP, because the "other" Minister can either be the Minister of Magic (from the PoV of the Prime Minister) or the Prime Minister, from the PoV of the MoM ( ... )
