#4 Rick Rack dress

Jul 07, 2012 01:06

Love/hate this dress. And learned a few things in the process of making it.
This dress is a mash-up pattern! First time I tried that.
Bodice is McCall's 5927, skirt is Vogue 8723.

Pictures and thoughts... Beware of ugly fabric )

I don't hate it, but it does need the belt. Can you scoop the neck slightly? That will probably help the top from being so overwhelming.

I'm not sure how to do that without taking apart the whole bodice. I'll have to think about that... It probably would help.

I love it! If I may politely disagree, I think the neckline is perfect--the bodice just looks so perfectly fifties (to me, at least) and oh my! It's awesome.

The fabric is cool, too. It looks interesting from a difference, and up close it's super cute. I think I'd wear it both with or without the belt, because it looks darling both ways, but I'm so impressed. I especially love the little sleeves--I've been looking for a dress with cap sleeves.

I'm a tad jealous now, heh. I can sew skirts without much of an issue, and make things for A, but I can't for the life of me make myself a fitted dress with non-stretch fabric. I hope you feel very proud of yourself. :)

Thank you!
I have heard that stretch fabrics are much more difficult to work with, so I haven't dared to try it yet.

Oh, weird! I love them--I find they're a lot more forgiving if you don't get the fit 100% right, and since I've got so many strangely-shaped bits I like that. :)

That is so effing cute! I like it with the belt best. Reminds me of something the cool rockabilly girls around here would wear. I'm jealous of your skill and craftiness :)

I think its adorable. I want you to teach me how to sew by pattern. The things i make? memory. and I don't know how to use different feet on the machine. I bet you could show me how to be better, faster, (stronger?)

Thanks! I'm impressed you can make things by memory. I definitely require detailed instructions.

I think it would look fine with the belt and maybe something up top to break up the ric rac pattern...like a necklace or a felt flower pin?

You're making me want to try a dress for myself with all these arorable patterns :D

Thanks!
I think you should give it a try! I've mostly done stuff rated easy or very easy, but it was not as tricky as I expected.
