Other characters: N/A
Character Name: Sophie Devereaux
Series / Movie: Leverage
Age: A lady never tells. (Unknown but likely somewhere mid 30s)
From when: The end of 3x16 (The San Lorenzo Job)
Personality: Sophie is a warm and caring person which helps in both her work on the team and as her various persona's. She's seen as the mother of the group; protecting them all but also being the glue that holds the team together. When acting Sophie's skills and characterisation are terrible but when Sophie is working a con she is the best actor that you've seen - something that's ironic as Sophie was most likely an actor before she became a grifter. Sophie's good at thinking on her feet during a con and is known as the best grifter that you will meet - someone that is feared by other thieves ("You can't out con Sophie Devereaux"). On occasion Sophie's emotions and ambitions have been known to get in the way of a con which has blown the teams cover and ruined the con.
As well as being the grifter Sophie takes a little more of a personal side to the team, mostly with Nate and Parker. During cons, as well as in between cons, Sophie mentors Parker in social skills to help bridge the gap a little between Parker and the rest of the world and to help her be a more effective thief - something that has seen to be effective, especially during some of the teams later cons when Parker plays a more active role and has even occasionally grifted. For Nate, however, her role is a little more complex which is partly due to the long history that they share. Sophie tries to balance Nate's life by helping him stop drinking but also to keep him from becoming out of control. After Sophie temporarily leaves the team she returns after hearing that the team needs help - that Nate needs help. One thing to know about Sophie is that she wouldn't let the team down, especially not when they need her.
Sophie cares about the team. To her they are family, the best family that she's had, though on more than one occasion it's been indicated to Sophie that some of her feelings run a little deeper ("I don't think you and Nate get to serve me that particular meal"). Sophie's relationship with Nate appears not only to be complicated because of their long history but also because of deeper feelings that they shared. Sophie takes words to heart and even during some of the cons Sophie and Nate have managed to have a slightly honest conversation with each other - or at least point certain things out - despite being in character. Over time Sophie's become a little frustrated with Nate but it's never stopped her from standing by him when he's needed her and, even though it's unlikely that she'd admit it, Sophie needs him as much as he needs her: they make each other better people when they're together. Nate has tried on several occasions to advance their relationship but each time she's turned him down - once doing so after reminding him that he wouldn't be able to make that commitment due to the timing. Other than a long flirtation with Nate, Sophie hasn't had a lot of luck with romance; whenever someone is close to her she backs away, feeling as if they'll never know the real her - she can't even tell them her real name.
An OOC Act: The person that Sophie really is is a well kept secret especially considering that Sophie has only just given the team her real name - something that she denied Nate the longest. Considering this Sophie would not reveal, especially to a stranger, details of who her true identity is. As well as this side to privacy regarding Sophie she is also rather private about her feelings - particularly regarding Nate - and is unlikely to talk about or act on them. (At least maybe not without a drink or two)
History: There is little known about Sophie or at least there is little that Sophie has told, particularly about her early life. Sophie was born in England and became an actress, and later a grifter, during the early years of her life. As a grifter Sophie became adept at creating various persona's - Sophie Devereaux being her most notable one. One of Sophie's earliest and longest used aliases was that of Charlotte Prentiss - one of her former stage names who was transformed into the Duchess of Hanover around 1992. As Charlotte, whom Sophie spent seven years establishing, Sophie became very close with the Countess of Kensington. When Sophie later left she had told the countess that she wanted to see the world and as she's now wanted in many European countries we know that this is, at least mostly, true.
In 1999, under the alias of "Jenny", Sophie was caught by IYS investigator Jim Sterling after she stole the Second David from the Vatican. This was the first of many meetings that Sophie would have with Sterling along with IYS. Later that same year Sophie met Nathan Ford, another insurance investigator, whilst trying to steal a Degas. Like with Sterling Sophie would meet Nate many times over the coming years as he chased her and her crimes. After meeting in 1999 they then met again in 2001, where Sophie introduced herself and was later shot by him that same year, and met again many more times over the next seven and a half years. During conversation Sophie said that they'd known each other for ten years whereas Nate only said eight - his reasoning being that he met Sophie eight years ago but she was just a thief before that. In 2008 Nate tracked Sophie down to ask her to work with him on one job after needing her skills as a grifter. Despite Nate's plan that the team split after the job they manage to convince him to stay together, to pick up where the law leaves off and to help those that can't help themselves. The team stayed together though not everything was smooth sailing - at the start they wondered whether this was for them though after they saw the good results of their deeds they decided to stay together, to help others. Although their work started well things nearly ended badly for them when Sophie blew a con after Nate was shot. They managed to complete the con and frame a corrupt judge in the process but it was a close call for them, though unfortunately not the only one that they'd come across.
When Sophie noticed, in 2009, that the CEO of IYS was holding an art exhibition, with the First David being the centerpiece, Sophie saw this as an opportunity to hit two birds with one stone - to let Nate have some revenge but also to be the first thief to steal both David's in over four hundred years. The con originally started out simply but the opportunity for Sophie became a little hard to resist, something which ended up ruining the con when Stirling discovered their plan - the one thing that no one had anticipated. They decided to scatter for six months but ended up reuniting after three although Sophie had to start from scratch with the team - her trust with them lost. After coming up with a new plan and successfully pulling off the con the team then scattered again, deciding that this would be the end.
With the absence of the team Sophie returned to her original roots and love of theatre and later invited the team to the opening night of The Sound of Music. After hearing awful reviews Sophie tried to convince Nate to reform the team, using the reviews as her bargaining chip. As well as returning to acting Sophie had tried to turn her life around, trying to live life as straight as possible and had found a boyfriend as well. Unfortunately things didn't work out between them leading to Sophie becoming increasing frustrated over the fact that no one knew who she really was. After a con went awry when another team was also running a con at that location, Sophie revealed to Nate that the team wasn't the only team that she has worked with. During her years as a grifter Sophie teamed up with Marcus Starke, another grifter, to steal various works of art before drifting again. Sophie met with Starke again many years later during said con where Sophie was almost killed. This attempt on Sophie's life, and the lack of mourners at her funeral, was the final push for Sophie leading her to inform Nate that she planned to leave, though only temporarily until she could find herself. Because Sophie cared about them she called in a favour with a friend - another grifter - to help them until she returned. Sophie's leave from the team lasted for several months until Tara - and Nate - placed calls to her. Sophie returns knowing how much they need her and managed to save them, though it turned out that Nate was the one who eventually saved Sophie as well as the rest of the team by sacrificing his life to prison to give the team a clear exit. Sophie tried to talk Nate out of his act, telling him that she came back because he needed her but it didn't change Nate's mind. Sophie saw what Nate did for what it was - the only way he knew to protect his family.
Not long after Nate went to prison Sophie and the team tried to put a plan in motion to rescue Nate - something that Nate refused. When an opportunity to save someone else in prison came up Nate turned back to the team who help him escape as well as setting free an innocent man and shining the light onto a corrupt prison system. Away from the cons Nate spent the next few months trying to earn back Sophie's trust as well as trying to guess her real name - something which she'd told the rest of the team except Nate, telling him that he hadn't yet earned it. Although at first weary and distrustful of a mystery Italian woman, Sophie went along with Nate's plan to get Damian Moreau - trusting Nate as well as knowing that if they fail then Nate would go back to prison. Over the next few months the team take on cons that will eventually lead them to Damian Moreau. Their first attempt to take him down failed when Moreau saw through their plan and escaped to San Lorenzo. When Nate later pitches the idea that they should follow him and try again Sophie is among the first to tell him how ridiculous that plan is and not to mention dangerous. Nate's argument, along with his trust, wins Sophie over and the team travels to San Lorenzo where they enter into a strange world, needing to corrupt and win a political election to push aside Moreau's immunity, eventually ending with him in prison. Despite the good that they did the election doesn't quite sit right with Sophie, at least at first - politics is something of a dirty concept to her, and a word that she can't say. After their success Sophie shares a drink with Nate, which is where Sophie enters the game - after waking up the next morning having slept with Nate.
Abilities / Powers: Sophie is one of the best grifters that you'll meet; her 'performances' and persona's are very well created and fully fleshed out. She is multi-lingual and adept at using various accents and also makes frequent use of
Neural-linguistic Programming.
Sample Journal Entry: Well that was a nice, pleasant entrance; being told you're not real and then pushed out the door - it looks more like kidnapping to me. So what are we supposed to do, sit around on our little selves until we're destroyed or... Is there even an or? I'd rather not sit around and wait for something to happen and anything else is far too surreal: I'm Sophie Devereaux not some figment of... well, nevermind that; I suppose I should actually find out what's going on, I can curse at Nate later.
Alright. I'm Sophie and well this town is quaint if not a little quiet which I don't suppose is all that bad, though I'm going to need to find something to do. Are there anywhere where I could resupply my closet or even a stage? An actress has to keep busy.
Oh and Parker, I know that you're here too so whenever you'd like to say hello would be nice.
Sample RP: Well this was unnerving, to hear that she was not her own person but some mans creation? Sophie had lost herself once before, started on a path to find herself and was then told this? It was odd. She wasn't his creation, Sophie refused to believe that despite the tape she'd been given - her life was her own, her many lives were her own. Sophie had started walking since she'd been unceremoniously dumped in the town square, a slow pace to her and no destination in mind, only trying to rid her mind of his words. She was real, she had to be. You don't sleep with Nathan bloody Ford, drunk too, and not be real. She felt real, the headache from the drink and... well she didn't need to think about that now, she needed to get home.
"Nate, Eliot?" Sophie couldn't remember in all this mess whether she'd put her ear bud back in but she had to have, she never went without it. Well, except for when she'd left that time and she'd had a good reason. This time Sophie didn't even know where she was, where was Peaksville anyway? If she couldn't contact them... well, she'd come back to keep an eye on Nate - he needed her - and her sharp exit? She didn't even want to think about that. Finally checking her ear Sophie let out a sigh of dismay when she discovered that it wasn't there. Well, unless she could find a phone - hers had nicely disappeared - she was out of options. At least until they rescued her, they wouldn't leave her.
