Secrets To Spill: A "Death Of The Family" Fanmix

Author's Notes: This fanmix was inspired by the recent "Death Of The Family" storyline in the main Batman comic title written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Greg Capullo (credit for the cover art also goes to him). To fully appreciate this mix, it is recommended that you read the full story beforehand (if you haven't read it yet, consider this your spoiler warning). Please also note, there are essentially two versions of "Death Of The Family" available currently. The original version, released as the first print single issue comics, and the collected hardcover trade version, which features an edited script. Depending on which version you read, you'll definitely get different impressions. This mix was created with the original version in mind, which was more directly focused on the Batman/Joker relationship. With that said, I tried to compile this song list to line up with reveals and events as they unfolded throughout issues #13 through #17. All of the lyrics are meant to be from Joker's point-of-view. Like the original source material itself, this mix highlights Joker's warped romantic obsession with his wayward "Bat King", as well as his disdain for the rest of the Bat Family for making Batman "weak" (his opinion). Lyrically, it touches upon the story's inherent themes and metaphors involving secrets, love, co-dependency, relationship roles, and masks/identities.

[EDIT] The paperback trade version of "DOTF" has recently been released, and it's basically the hardcover version with most (but not all) of the original version's Batman/Joker innuendo added back in. If you can only read one version of the book, I'd definitely recommend the paperback, as it combines the best of both versions.

1. "What You Want" - Evanescence

Every heart in my hands
Like a pale reflection

Hello, hello, remember me?
I’m everything you can’t control

2. "Back & Forth" - Foo Fighters

I'm lookin' for some back and forth with you
Are you feeling the same as I do now and now and then?
I'm lookin' for some back and forth with you
Are you feeling the same as I do?
Down and out

Holding my breath I waited and waited
How'd the simple life get so complicated?
Shoes to fill, secrets to spill down you

3. "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" - Lisa Marie Presley

You can think that I'm evil and I'm off the rails
You ain't seen nothin' yet

If I don't get with your system then I'm sure to fail
Well you ain't seen nothin' yet

4. "Gasoline" - The Dead Weather

To be soft is too easy, huh
Don't get soft on me
I don't want a sweetheart, Sweetheart
I want a machine

I love you the most, I do
When you're so close to me
I can smell the gasoline

5. "Madness" - Muse

And when I look back
At all the crazy fights we had
Like some kind of m-m-madness
Was taking control, yeah
(Mu-mu-mu-mad-mad-mad) x2

And now I have finally seen the light
And I... have finally realized
What you need, mmm

6. "My Fairy King" (Langham Studio Version) - Queen

Someone... someone has drained the color from my wings
Broken my fairy circle ring
And shamed the king in all his pride
Changed the winds and wronged the tides

7. "Do You Want To Know A Secret?" - The Beatles

Listen
Do you want to know a secret?
Do you promise not to tell?
Whoa whoa-oa
Closer
Let me whisper in your ear
Say the words you long to hear
I'm in love with you
Oo-ooh oo-ooh ooh

8. "Dance With Me" - IAMX

The bars of the cage
Will bend, but will remain
But there is always pain
There is always pain

Dance with me on the white coal
Run with me through the flames

9. "Welcome To My Nightmare" - Alice Cooper

Welcome to my nightmare
I think you're gonna like it
I think you're gonna feel you belong

A nocturnal vacation
Unnecessary sedation
You want to feel at home 'cause you belong

10. "Hail To The King" - Avenged Sevenfold

Hail to the king
Hail to the one
Kneel to the crown
Stand in the sun
Hail to the king

Hail, hail, hail!

The king...

11. "I'm Your Villain" - Franz Ferdinand

I know what I am
I'm your villain
I don't give a damn if
I'm your villain
Because serious
You're so serious

12. "Black Masquerade" - Rainbow

I know the key to secrets never told, they're hidden in your soul
Feelings you hide never wanting me to find, they've always been mine
Release all the madness within, let it all begin
Now you'll see, the dark side of me
In our black masquerade

13. "Banquet" - International Victim*

Fueled by my hindsight
Pulled by my pain
Promise tomorrow
This game'll get settled
Mocked by your shallow makeshift security
But I'mma get even, as sure as I stand here bleeding

Charge up the saints for all their sinning
And blame the bloodline back to where it begins
No chance in hell to save the slick ones from the banquet they'll be served
Take a plate and get in line with the deserving

14. "I Am You" - Depeche Mode

There's no turning back
We're in this trap
No denying the facts
No, no, no
No excuses to give
I'm the one you're with
We've no alternative
No, no, no

Dark obsession in the name of love
This addiction that we're both part of
Leads us deeper into mystery
Keeps us craving endlessly

15. "Dance Me To The End Of Love" - The Civil Wars

Dance me to your beauty like a burning violin
Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive branch, be my homeward dove
And dance me to the end of love

16. "Hurricane" - Drew Sarich*

Funny how demons'll rise above
Soaked to the skin with how you loved me
I never saw your hidden hurricane coming
Now not even Jesus bats an eye

With oily allure you'll rise above
I took a dive and thought you loved me
You cracked a smile and said 'a hurricane coming'
Now I'm left here drowning in the depths of your goodbye
