Yup, I have one of those electronic readers. I'd been looking seriously at the Sony Reader - I'd heard really good things about it, but when the opportunity arose to get a kindle for really cheap, I couldn't pass it up. So far? I love it

Docs work best when you send them to yourself via Amazon. You can do it for about 10 cents and use the wireless connection via the @kindle.com address connected to your account, or you can get it downloadable via USB from your computer via the @free.kindle.com. This puts it into .anz (azn?) format, which works best.
.txt files work best if you want to just go from your computer to the kindle. They will have minor faults, though.
pdfs still don't work very well as far as I know. They say they will be improving them. I hope so. I want to put Midnight Sun on mine.
Check through the Kindle store by choosing "free" and you will find free books. They still send you a billing notice for each, but it's free. I'll see if I can find some titles. Some were classics, but some were modern... mature reads.
Last, if you or The Mr have an iphone, you can put your Kindle books on it for no extra charge.
I love it.

He has an iPod touch, I wonder if he can load books onto it? hmmm.
I sent my .docx file to amazon, it worked okay, but seemed to lose some spaces here and there. Then I downloaded Mobipocket creator. And with a little work (not much, for me anyway) I got something that seems to work pretty well. The table of contents shows up when you hit the Menu button now...YAY, and the spacing problem is gone. Even the cover looks pretty good, I think.
I ended up with a .prc file, but the kindle sucks those up just fine. You can find it at:

If you get a chance, V, could you see if you can download this file? Just as a test?
thanks, dear!
