they're thinking of that long road ahead

Today I rode Pedal Pittsburgh's city tour. My goal was to ride the 100km (62mi) route for the first time ever. All that sounds like an entirely reasonable set of decisions given the evolving circumstances! Nice going on the 48 miles! (And thanks again for helping me out with the shifter on Josephine Street. It's better now than I can remember it being for a few years.)

It's a weird thing, but I've got some blotchy red spots on my thighs too. I first noticed them about 30 miles in, and today they're faded a bit but clearly still there. No idea what they are, aside from echoing your conclusion that they don't seem like sunburn. The best I've got is maybe some weird reaction to my bike shorts or something more like windburn? Either way, it's odd in my case because they're only in two little areas.

I did end up with a little bit of light sunburn on my thighs, which overlapped some but not all of the blotchy. I was wondering if it was reaction to the crappy sunscreen I was using, but reaction to bike shorts elastic might also be plausible. Or maybe something kicked up from the road, since I also had a couple spots on my shin.

I have a tendency to make sure all stopped cyclists I see are ok, even though I don't actually carry tools or know how to use them. But the people I ride with usually do.... :)
