My memories of really learning to cook start 10 years ago, when I first started living alone. Faced with suddenly being head of my own household and in charge of feeding two small kids on a regular basis on a low budget, I started learning simply by doing. I cook for 4, teenagers included, leftovers for lunches... I have been cooking larger and larger batches every year.
...and then I go to TN, and try to cook for 2.
It's not easy adjusting to fewer at dinner.

Leftovers make excellent lunches! Almost any time I'm cooking for more than 2 I'll try to make sure there's enough for a lunch for me. Xuth also eats some leftovers, but he's not quite as fanatical about it as I am. However, while the older boy would sometimes forage, it wasn't reliable, and the younger two pretty much don't seem to be able to see anything in clear plastic containers in the fridge. Sigh.

The left overs are virtually invisible to my children as well, but men seem to find them late at night, or on their way out to work in the morning.
