somewhere cold and caked in snow

Now that the latest cold snap has passed, it seems like a good time to revisit xuth's and my recent vacation getaway. This year we escaped to Black Moshannon State Park in the middle of PA. We chose this spot because there looked to be a fair number of hiking trails accessible without needing to drive anywhere, and also because they had a "modern" ( ( Read more... )

"emergency" kitchen supplies :)

(for reference we forgot to pack the bin that had all of our kitchen stuff in it into the car and didn't realize this until we got to the cabin. Fortunately State College (and its stores) isn't that far away.)

I once forgot to pack a whole pile of clean underwear before I left the country for almost 3 weeks, so I can completely understand. (Although getting out of the shower - post-transcontinental flight and jet-lagged - failing to find underwear in my bag was fairly confusing at the time.)

Sounds like a nice little get away, and being Winter and the Holiday Season I am thinking you had the park nearly to yourselves.

Did you have any clear night skies? If so how did they look? I'm always looking for places to take the telescope.

It's funny you posted this when you did as just a short while ago I wondered when you would make another LJ post.

There was one night where we had genuinely clear skies for a very short while. It was also the coldest. So I noticed this, got dressed enough to go outside and then watch the cloud cover slowly creep across the sky over the next 45 minutes or so.

The other two came back inside reporting clear skies and amazing views of faraway bright lights. I decided their reports were sufficiently gratifying, and that staying inside where it was warm was a better option for me at that point. :)

So much nice relaxing. And some physically exhausting bits, which mostly just helped with the relaxing. Only downside is that the cheap state park cabins don't have hot tubs or fireplaces... :)

Fun! I hiked there with Emilie and a friend, a decade ago (!) -- it looked good for day trips but the backpacking was disappointing. Seems you confirm the positives.

I would have liked to do more on the AFT, because the terrain was quite interesting, but, well, the terrain was a bit too interesting to get far. Also as it turned out, after 1.5 hours of hiking it I was feeling Just Fine, and after 3 hours of hiking I was Totally Done. I suspect it might be a little easier in non-snowy conditions, though.
