you just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake

Carnival this year was full of houseguests, visiting alums, too much food, near-perfect weather, no sunburn, some drinking, some braiding, some dancing, some tichu, and, of course, pie.

It started off with some small annoying bits, like a carnivalcam which failed to remain stable, and dinner plans that fell a little flat. But Thursday ended with some yummy tiramisu and games at my place, which was good. On Friday, I wandered around campus wrangling kids. We hit midway for booths and funnel cake and rides, and the cmu Robotics Club for their open house, where we were shown this cute little box. All that wandering was pretty tiring, what with the activity and noise and kids and x-treeem sun going on. Fortunately, that day ended with yummy beer and games at kelli's, which was good.

Saturday was a nice slow morning, then bbq, then scs, then kgb, then bbq, all with people and food, good and yummy, and moderately too much of. So I took the kids down into Schenley for some slow meandering along the water and rocks. It would have been even lovelier if I hadn't already been exhausted, but even so, it was very nice. Then we came home, dinnered, and eventually people came over and we held a (very laid-back and chatty) mini swing dance party in my livingroom, which was just way too silly, but quite fun.

sudo make me a pieSunday was party and pie preparations. My guests all made pie for me, and eventually many more pies showed up. All for me! It was lovely. It started drizzle-raining shortly after party-start, which drove almost everybody back inside, but with a good furniture setup, smart pie layout, and smaller numbers of people (likely due to weather and omgcarnivalcrash), it didn't feel crowded at all.

Overall, I counted about 22 pie or pie-like things, ~5 non-pie things, and about 45 people, which is more pie but fewer people than last year. Still, we made a very respectable effort at our 1/2 pie per person, and ended up with a bit less than 2 pie total leftovers. So much yum.

The list, as best as I can recall, included veggie pot pie and pumpkin cheesecake by cheerfulchaotic, pumpkin and pecan by soong, blueberry, chess, fruit tart, and cheesecake by nolemming, harvest by bhudson, quiche by csg87, 2 cherries by tame_eep, mint by es5f, parmesan pi by arashink, plate o' meat by mg4h, chocolate pudding pie by qiikakid, pumpkin by grouchyoldcoot, truffle pie by mj2q, mint and es5f pie by mpa, chili pie by dan, cheeseburger pie by jesse, lemon meringue by lisa, a brownie pie, and a mock mincemeat by I forgot who.

The party shifted to Tichu and board games fairly early on, then lost its usual half to dinner and plane flights, then eventually wound down to a few die-hard gamers, who were still at it when I crashed around 11pm, exhausted and happy. Awesome party.

Today, with the exception of a spare bhudson still hanging around, is, more or less, back to normal. Hopefully I'll be able to catch back up to myself in a few days.
