omg i LOVE your analogy! haha. and that makes complete sense too, i really would like to focus on just my riding and see where that goes. i've been riding with my head in the sand for 25 years & i finally get excellent instruction - i'm not in a hurry to give it up.

i had no idea you hadn't been riding for that long. there's other things to get on with, isn't there? i know there's a lot of other things (priorities) i could spend my $$$ on, that's for sure.

with option 2- I wouldn't see it as 4 years gone because I think you have learned a lot in the past few years with him. I don't know which option you should take, my gut would say SCREW THE BABIES AND HOUSE I WANNA RIDE! but the idea of commitment to stuff like that actually terrifies me, so there you go. ( Idont think having a child actually has to mean you never ride but I guess there is money involved) I have no idea what your financial situation entails, so it's hard to put forth an opinion. maybe retiring him and leasing a nice horse is a good idea.... and how old is taz?

I don't know how fair selling an arthritic horse that needs xrays and injections is to a potential buyer, would someone be ok with that?

the other potential is that instead of buying a house down the track, you buy a property and then your boys can live out their days wit hyou and you get to see them every day

yep, it's all about money. money to retire him AND ride a nice pony will be impossible to find.

perth house market is completely fucked, as you know. we're better off MOVING TO AMERICA and spending our millions there. people are buying NICE houses for soooo cheap. i'd get paid significantly less tho!

with leasing/selling him, i'd look for a non-riding home. IMO no one who could ride him "properly" would in their right mind want a broken down pony, but he'd be great for someone wanting to play with parelli & NH cos he's so sensitive & a great learner.

i have a lot of sympathy, seeing as i've been going through very similar stuff with socrates. in my case i'm going with #4, roughly-find him a long term leaser who wants to do casual riding, will keep him barefoot, and i will pay his vet/feet so that i can maintain ownership. he has until the end of may with his current lady and we're trying hard but if i don't find someone else, he'll just go retire for a couple months while i get liberty and i settled, and then i'll move him down wherever i end up putting her. it's a bitch when they get lame!

i dunno in his case though...i would probably try to treat. when liberty got diagnosed with ringbone they thought it would be the end of her career, but i got a 2nd opinion and it's hard to believe but it's 4+ years later and she's doing fine. he's so young and you've put so much into him-i think it would probably be worth it to try to treat at least somewhat and see what you can do.

also, i'm almost afraid to ask but what was the suggestion that you don't want to try??

... PTS.

it's the whole, "there's hundreds of NICE, SOUND horses out there..." mantra. i wasn't offended or anything, but it's obviously not one of my options right now.

it is a bitch when they're lame.

All I can say is what I'd do with Deli if I was in this situation... and honestly it would depend on my funds. If I had the ability without serious financial stress I'd treat her. If I didn't (like now) she would get retired in a pasture with other horses + supplements to make her more comfy. If she couldn't even walk or putz around the pasture without being in pain, I'd put her down.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. I know the feeling of desolation... it sucks hairy balls.

Also, I'd highly recommend a devilsclaw supplement of some kind if he isn't on one already.
