been ages and ages since i've even done any sort of groundwork with my horse (besides leading, haha). i spent this afternoon waiting for a tow truck & it was warm & humid. couldn't be buggered riding so decided to have a play instead. we spent about 2 minutes on the line & then i decided to see how he'd go off the line.

well, i'm pretty impressed. ( Read more... )

Aww! Thanks for sharing this, Beej looks like a happy horse here. What a wonderful energy you guys have. I can tell he really loves you and is having fun playing. Made me smile to watch it, and also made me wonder if I could get anything nearly as good out of Sage...with the spring grass coming up and our only real workspace being a grass arena, I don't know...

Anyhow, I do see a few things to point out--when you 'send' him, just send him *once* and UP your phases if he doesn't listen. Waving the stick at him continually will just desensitize him to your cue.

I would guess you don't have to lean over quite so far to disengage him either. He's tuned into you pretty well and will probably notice a more subtle cue.

But the important thing is, you guys look like you're enjoying each other's company...and I'm so impressed with how floppy his ears are at the end and how he's just totally content to follow you around. That really says something right there.

yes you're right, i do tend to nag. i do that when riding as well & i need to get more serious about .. well, getting serious, lol.

glad you noticed the things i did. i was quite happy with how he went & i'm just so stoked with his progress. or *our* progress anyway, lol. he's a top little horse & i'm glad i stuck with him instead of giving up.

:) Looks like he's happy.

And I love that arena! I do my work in a grass area or a muddy round pen. :/ Hard to get the horses' to focus when they're worried about where their feet are going!

yeah, i'm very lucky with our arena. it's got lights too, which makes it WONDERFUL in winter. it's not graded often enough tho. about once per year, if that...
