Being in bed is the antithesis of being on fire:

It could be worse. I could be on fire.
It could be better. I could be in bed.

This sort of turns the whole glass is half full/half empty thing inside out. Why yes, I am optimistic in my pessimism, thank you very much.

It is important to remember that for every rich bastard who is sneering down at you, there is some poor bastard you can sneer at, and for every needy soul begging you for a handout there is some wealthy philanthropist you can try to sponge off!
