Oh I don't know, maybe it was being told what to believe, or having to take the Bible as surface information and not being able to question it. Being kept behind a curtain my entire educational career without any information on other religions other than, "Others exist, but they're all going to hell for not being Christian." Accusing other people of being sinful just for believing in a different kind of God is not my sort of bag.
