"Don't laugh at me," she protested, glaring at him as best as she could manage, and Izuru waved his hands quickly, still snickering.
"I'm not laughing at you," he promised. "I just think it's -- cute!"
But she didn't appreciate that either, and her glower turned more accusing, although her cheeks flushed slightly -- embarrassed, probably. Izuru swallowed his amusement and said apologetically, "Peaches are very tasty."
Only slightly appeased, Hinamori turned and folded her arms over her chest. "Abarai-kun had better get here soon," she said, darkly, her voice promising all the unpleasant things she was too ladylike to actually say.
Abarai-kun wouldn't be getting here, because Izuru hadn't actually invited him, although her confusion was understandable -- he'd led her to believe that he had. He rushed to say, "Actually, I wonder if you've ever seen peach trees in bloom? It's about the right time of year for them, and I know they don't grow crops like peaches in Rukongai."
Distracted from her fit of pique, Hinamori's posture eased, and she glanced up at him, thoughtful. "Peach trees? No, I've been so busy with classes since I've gotten here... I haven't had a chance to go sight-seeing, really."
Izuru smiled warmly at her. "Should we go, then? I can be your guide. There are some peach trees very near here."
"But, Abarai-kun--"
"They're very near -- right over there." He put a hand on her shoulder (applauding himself for his audacity) and turned her in the direction, pointing at the pale-blooming trees visible down another lane of the park. "If Abarai-kun comes while we're over there, he'd be able to feel out our reiatsu."
And not a lie in sight! Hinamori tilted her head. "Abarai-kun failed that exam, you know," she pointed out, smiling, and started moving in the direction of the peach trees anyway.
It was too early for the fruit themselves, but the flowers decorated the tree's naked branches: sweet pink petals curving around red centers, crowded with outstretched tendrils. Hinamori was enchanted by them, drifting from tree to tree with her hands clasped tight.
"It's so beautiful," she murmured, and Izuru said softly, "Yes."
But she wasn't looking at him to see that he wasn't studying the lane of flowering trees the way she was; instead she lifted a hand overhead. She didn't try to catch one of the flowers, just out of her reach, but just paused, watching the flowers behind her spread fingers.
"Don't you just wish you could catch one, and hold onto it forever?" Hinamori asked the air softly.
She couldn't not know, could she? She couldn't really not know how his heart leapt into his throat, right? But Izuru only swallowed it again, swallowed his response, and lifted his arm, reaching past her to gently separate one of the little flowers from the branch and bring it down to her level.
"It's not hard," he said, lying.
He reached out impulsively to thread it into her hair, just above her ear. Hinamori looked startled, but then she laughed, the sound ringing out in the empty air.
(Special bonus!!)
Izuru grabbed Renji by the collar and whispered urgently to him, "Hey, Abarai-kun, listen-- I need you to pretend that I invited you to the park but something came up and you couldn't make it."
For a blank moment Renji just stared at the hand on his neatly-pressed uniform, and then he scowled at the blond. "What?!" he snapped. "You used me as an excuse to get an accidental date out of Hinamori again?"
"Abarai-kun, please, I'm begging you," Izuru said desperately.
Renji harrumphed and picked up his textbook again. "Fine," he muttered. "But I wish I got invited to half as many fun events as the person I'm pretending to be."
