Prologue 1 2 3 4 Alan woke in the morning feeling greatly refreshed. He knew the Doctor had to have slipped him something to get him to sleep so soundly for so long. As had become routine over the past couple of weeks, he did a check of his injuries. His right eye still couldn’t open fully, the skin still tender from the slash and stitches. It looked like he would still have to wear the eye patch. His ribs were still sore at the touch, but it didn’t hurt as much as before when he turned slightly. Another couple of days with the Doctor’s “cure”, he would be on crutches instead of the wheelchair.
He lifted himself from the bed and into the wheelchair conveniently located. He headed for the door and found the Doctor on his way in.
“How are you feeling this morning?”
“Getting better, thanks to you.”
“Any movement in the legs yet?”
“Not yet.” Alan tried not to sound petulant.
“Hopefully by the end of the week. The scans showed everything should heal just fine.”
The Doctor pushed him out of the TARDIS and into Henry’s living room. Going by the light outside, it couldn’t be much later than 7:00 in the morning. Amy and Shawn were most definitely still asleep.
Henry greeted them from the kitchen. “Morning, gentlemen! Care to join with coffee on the porch?”
“I’ll take a cup.”
“Do you have tea?” The Doctor began to go through the cabinets. “I thought I saw some yesterday.”
Henry went to the opposite end of the kitchen, opened a cabinet and pulled out a box of tea bags. “Don’t have much call for tea. I hope it’s still good.”
“Should be.” The Doctor selected a tea bag and placed it in a mug that had a picture of a smoking gun with the words “Sorry I missed you”.
When the coffee started, Alan nearly drooled at the aroma like one of Pavlov’s dogs. Henry chuckled. Drinks in hand, they went onto the porch and sat in companionable silence, which was quite a feat for the Doctor. They eventually began trading stories; the ones bringing the most laughs were Henry’s of Shawn’s antics as a child.
There were muffled sounds from the kitchen and the door slid open as Shawn came out to join them.
Henry checked his watch. “You’re up earlier than normal. What’s the occasion?”
“We’ve got company.” Shawn leaned on the rail. “What’s on the agenda?”
“I have to go into the station today. For how long depends on the paperwork.”
Shawn then looked at the Doctor expectantly. “What? Oh you want to know my plans? That’s something new. I would like to take readings from around the area to triangulate the kidnapper’s location.”
Shawn then looked at Alan. “Cool, because I need to take a look at the scene.”
“Shawn, you can’t make him go back there!”
“Henry, it’s okay. Shawn needs to see it. I think I need to as well.”
“Right. We’ll drop you off at the station then take the truck.”
“There are five of us plus a wheelchair,” Henry complained.
“That’s why the truck. The Doctor and I will be in the back with the chair while Alan and Amy sit in the cab with you.”
“Sitting in the back of a pickup truck? I don’t think I’ve done that before. Voluntarily anyway.”
“Think of it as another new experience, then.” Alan grinned as the Doctor contemplated this potential outing as something wonderful when most people don’t think of it at all. “Guess it’s time for breakfast, then. Need any help?”
“You cooked last time you were here. Shawn and I can handle it. We should be done by the time you get changed.”
Alan looked up at the Doctor. “Which of us gets to wake Amy?”
“You, obviously,” the Doctor answered as they entered the TARDIS.
They never had the chance to find out as the woman in question met them in the hall freshly showered and dressed. She continued on as the Doctor took Alan to his room. “Call me if you need me.” He left.
Alan found his clothes neatly folded or hung in the wardrobe. He chose jeans and a red collared shirt. Telekinesis made changing easier and he was soon in Henry’s kitchen indulging in another coffee and eggs over-easy.
Half an hour later, they were in the truck on the way to the station. The Doctor and Shawn were chatting animatedly in the truck bed while inside the cab Henry tried to talk of anything besides the case. Alan didn’t pay much attention unless he was asked a direct question.
They all went inside and while Henry took Shawn and the Doctor into the Chief’s office - Henry wanted to make sure they had official permission - Juliet came over to talk with Alan and Amy. “What are you doing here?”
“Dropping off Henry so we can use the truck. We’re going to the basement.”
There was no hiding her concern. “Are you sure?”
“I’m going to have to face it at some point. It might as well be now.”
Juliet turned to Amy. “You make sure to get him out of there if it seems too much.”
“I’ll do what I can,” the red-head promised.
Alan didn’t like being talked about like he was a child, but he could understand their concern. He wasn’t sure how he would take it and to know that someone would be watching out during the ‘experience’ made him feel secure.
After multiple promises to be careful, not to touch anything and to notify them of any hunches or theories, they were allowed to leave. Shawn kept up a conversation based on 80s pop culture. They all contributed, but it was mostly Shawn.
When he parked the truck in front of a two-story colonial in a quiet neighborhood, Alan was surprised. The house looked so typical, so normal. His captor must have put on quite a front to keep the neighbors away. Then again, neighbors always say they never suspected So-And-So was a killer.
“I want to take a look around the outside,” Shawn said. “Then we’ll go inside.”
“Sure.” Alan tried to cover up the anxiety he was feeling. He knew it was human to feel fear, but as a soldier he was trained to hide it.
Shawn went to the left side of the house while the Doctor went to the right, scanning with the sonic screwdriver. Amy kindly didn’t try to take his mind off things with inane chatter, but just stood by the open door of the truck, there if he needed anything.
The two men returned to the truck and soon Alan was back in the basement where he had been held captive and tortured for days. He took a deep breath and looked around. It looked like any suburban basement, though cleaner than most due to Forensics. To the right on the wall just at the base of the steps was the fuse box. Just to the left of that was the laundry area with a washer, dryer and deep sink. Can’t breathe! Can’t breathe! The wall directly opposite the steps was set up as a work bench with miscellaneous tools on a peg board. Oh, God, the pain! What the hell does he want? The wall on the left was lined with shelves of odds and ends. Aren’t there supposed to be bodies? His eyes were then drawn to the center of the room and the stained cement. I can’t feel my legs! What has he done? What have I done? Oh, my God! Oh, my God!
“Alan, concentrate on the sound of my voice. You’re safe. He can’t hurt you.”
Alan heard the Voice. It was comfort and safety so he did what it said. He blinked a few times and a concerned face came into focus. “Doctor?”
The Time Lord smiled. “Yeah. You back with us?”
“Sorry. It’s just everywhere I look brings back flashes.”
“It’s all right. I’m done down here,” Shawn said. “Though I would like to check out the rest of the house.”
“I just need some air. I’ll wait out front.”
Alan didn’t miss the look shared between the Doctor and Shawn.
“Amy, why don’t you help Shawn look for things not…right. I’ll sit with Alan outside.”
